The position is located in the Health Information Management Department at the Wind River Service Unit, Fort Washakie, Wyoming. The position assures that complete and accurate diagnostic and procedural coded data is present for research, epidemiology, outcomes and statistical analysis, financial & strategic planning, reimbursement, and evaluation of quality care. The position reports to the HIM Supervisor.
Duties
Apply ICD-10, CPT-4 and HCPC5 codes for medical and clinical processes, e.g., disease, illness or injury condition.
Analyze, code, abstract, report and maintain medical record information.
Code complicated medical records that are difficult to classify using official conventions and guidelines.
Use computerized information systems, e.g., electronic health record, encoding software, etc

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-5: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level OR 4 years above high school. Examples of specialized experience: Assist providers in completion of their health record documentation and assist coders. Scan documents into the electronic health record. File and purge inactive charts.
GS-6: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Analyze, interpret and abstract data from clinical documentation and/or electronic health record to assure the presence and compliance of all component parts of the record; and assigning diagnostic and procedure codes.
GS-7: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Analyze, interpret and abstract data from clinical documentation and/or electronic health record to assure the presence and compliance of all component parts of the record; perform quality and medico-legal analysis to ensure requirements of the record are complete, accurate, and reflect sufficient data to justify the diagnosis and warranted treatment; review, assign, and correct diagnostic and procedure codes; assist with coding and training to co-workers, providers, contractors, etc.
GS-8: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: apply a comprehensive level of medical terminology and abbreviations; anatomy and physiology; diagnostic services (laboratory, radiology, etc.), major disease processes, pharmacology, pathophysiology and metric system to abstract information to assign codes to identify special clinical findings, support existing diagnoses, or substantiate listing additional diagnoses in the medical record; consult with physician and other clinicians for clarification or additional documentation if record contains conflicting or ambiguous data.
Specialized Experience-Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled.
QUALITY RANKING FACTOR: Quality ranking factors (QRFs) are KSA's that could be expected to enhance significantly performance in a position, but, unlike selective factors, are not essential for satisfactory performance. Applicants who possess the quality ranking factors can be ranked above those who do not, but no one can be rated ineligible solely for failure to possess a quality ranking factor. Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
