This position is located at the Baltimore National Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.
Duties
The Maintenance and Operations Supervisor is responsible for daily, weekly, monthly, and annual long-range planning of cemetery operations. This includes all activities that pertain to development and use of gravesites; headstones, niches and flat markers from receipt to installation to perpetual maintenance; monument care and maintenance; gravesite maintenance; grounds maintenance; facilities maintenance; and vehicle and equipment maintenance. Establishes schedules, deadlines, sets priorities, and has the authority to adjust as needed to meet changing demands and conditions. Provides equipment, tools, materials, facilities and training to accomplish work. Assigns projects to Work Leader, Maintenance Mechanic and Automotive Mechanic or designates a team leader for special projects. Incumbent provides guidance and supervision.
Supervises all permanent and temporary field employees.
Incumbent assigns all gravesites for daily use and coordinates the opening and closing of the grave in the interment/inurnment operations. Ensures that enough sites are available to support the published schedule, directs the opening of other sites based on customer demands. Determines sites to be opened based on availability, weather, and ground conditions, and is the primary authority to make any adjustments to sites if required. Works with the Director/Assistant Director for approval of disinterment of remains from the national cemeteries and ensures all applicable federal and state regulations are met prior to releasing the remains from government control. Utilizes disinterred sites as prescribed by NCA regulations.
Reviews the progress of work being accomplished to ensure that the quality of workmanship and timely completion of work is achieved and that the cemetery grounds are maintained in an orderly, neat and clean appearance always to reflect National Shrine and OAI standards. Ensures that his/her subordinates are complying with all rules, regulation and operation within established policies and procedures for all interments for casketed and cremated remains are accomplished in a dignified manner.
Inspects the grounds daily in order to plan and schedule such grounds maintenance activities as filling sunken graves, marker alignment, floral pick-up and preparing areas for pre/post emergent for weed control. Identifies and plans for sections needing major and minor renovation. Conducts ongoing tree and shrub maintenance program by assuring that the tree and shrubs are properly cared for, oversees the operation of pruning, removal, feeding and shaping of plantings and existing trees and shrubs.
Ensures employees assigned to marker activities: inspect, receive, store, distribute and install permanent markers and niche covers within established time frames.
Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.

Your background must demonstrate work involved in a wide range of cemetery operations and show the ability to supervise other employees in the execution of these cemetery operations.

Physical Requirements: This position requires heavy physical effort with reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate the different sets of controls while operating the equipment and attachments. The Incumbent may be subjected to considerable strain caused by vibration, jerking, and jolting of the equipment over rough surfaces and the need to operate controls in awkward positions. Heavy effort is frequently exercised when performing duties such as tamping, carrying caskets/urns, lifting/moving grave planks, setting headstones, etc. Incumbent must be able to walk on hilly, flat, or rolling terrain. This position requires the employee to life weights up to 50 lbs. Occasionally items weighing more than 50 lbs are lifted with assistance from co-works. Employee may be exposed to noise levels exceeding 85 dBA for up to eight (8) hours per day. This exposure may adversely affect hearing.
Working Conditions: Work must be performed outdoors, and incumbent will be exposed to all types of weather throughout the year. Incumbent will be exposed to the sun, noise, extreme hear, and humidity, cold, snow, rain, wind, and is subject to dirt, dust, fumes (from motor and exhaust) mud, and water. Work is performed in areas where pesticides, insecticides, and fertilizers are applied. Appropriate protective equipment will be worn. The operator is exposed to injury from mishaps that may be involved in the operation of grounds maintenance equipment.
