This position is located at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), VA Medical Center, in Fayetteville, NC. The primary purpose of this position is to transport patients and their caregivers, as well as linens, equipment, and/or other related items throughout the medical center.
Duties
. Major duties and responsibilities include:
Operates a variety of vehicles (gas, diesel, and/or electric) with varying number of axles, weights, and control systems.
Transports patients, their caregivers, and associated medical support equipment throughout the medical campus.
Performs appropriate load distribution and securing of loads when maneuvering large vehicles in confined areas that are congested with other vehicles and/or pedestrian traffic.
Evaluates conditions and limits of roads, and assess traffic hazards.
Practices defensive driving techniques at all times while operating vehicles in the performance of job duties.
Assumes responsibility for the safety of all passengers in the vehicle being operated; to include instructing passengers in posted rules for riding in the vehicle.
Performs proper loading/unloading of patients and equipment to prevent damage to the cargo, injury to the passengers, or damage to the vehicle.
Completes trip tickets, and inspection records (as required).
Presents a courteous attitude towards patients, co-workers, and visitors.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications
DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: This position requires a current, valid state driver's license. Do not upload a copy of your license at this time. If an interview is requested, you may be required to provide a copy of your current, valid, and unrestricted state driver's license.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The daily duties performed by the incumbent consist of climbing in and out of vehicles, and the ability to maneuver longer and heavier vehicles such as patient vehicles. Moderate to heavy physical effort is required of handling objects weighting up to and over 50 pounds especially when loading and unloading patients. Incumbent must be physically sound and have good coordination of eyes, hands, feet, and vision and depth perception. Incumbent must be mentally alert to traffic hazards and dangers of the highway. Incumbent must be able to pass annual VA medical exams.
The incumbent is required to work outside and is frequently exposed to severe weather conditions when loading and unloading vehicles. Frequently, he is required to make long trips at night as well as daylight in all types of weather and traffic conditions. Exposure to accidents and resulting injury is present during loading/unloading and while operating vehicle. The incumbent will be required to work occasional long hours due to early and late patient appointments, as well as weekends and holidays to accommodate patients with special needs appointments such as dialysis patients and weekend clinic patients.
