This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA),Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Fayetteville, N.C., Veterans Transportation Section under the Associate Director's Office. The primary duties of this position is transporting the Medical Center patients, supplies, materials, mail, etc. Incumbent receives supervision from the Mobility Manager and the Transportation Assistant.
Duties
Duties and responsibilities for this position include, but not limited to the following:
Operates diesel, electric and gasoline-powered vehicles with gross vehicle weight of up to and including 14,500 pounds. These vehicles are capable of carrying loads weighing up to and including one ton. Included are vehicles such as the 15- passenger bus, vans, trucks, automobiles. Vehicle specially equipped with stretcher and (non-emergency) medical equipment or may be equipped with special purpose powered equipment such as a wheelchair lifts or lift gates.
Performs preventive maintenance, cleaning and emergency repairs to motor vehicles.
Transports patients, mail, supplies, equipment and other duties assigned by the supervisor/transportation assistant.
Operate vehicles transporting government personnel, patients, material and supplies offsite administrative offices, over local, state, and interstate roads.
Operate vehicle transporting pharmacy items i.e., (discharge medication for nursing home patients), refrigerator items- i.e. (Injectable Medication), emergency pickup from other hospitals in the community for either impatient or outpatient pharmacy sources, lab items (urine, plasma, body fluids, stools, whole blood), diagnostic specimen, Specialty Clinic/Urgent Care Unit such item -i.e., (liquid nitrogen).
May be required to transport a diverse group of patients including Psych Patients and Spinal Cord Injury patients. These patients are transported frequently.
Drivers are required to check in with the dispatcher on their location constantly throughout the duty day to ensure that patients are being transported in a timely manner. This requirement also gives the dispatcher the ability to divert drivers as needed; reporting to the dispatcher is a mandatory requirement for all drivers and will be strictly enforced.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The daily duties performed by the incumbent consist of climbing in and out of vehicles, and the ability to maneuver longer and heavier vehicles such as patient vehicles. Moderate to heavy physical effort is required of handling objects weighting up to and over 50 pounds especially when loading and unloading patients. Incumbent must be physically sound and have good coordination of eyes, hands, feet, and vision and depth perception. Incumbent must be mentally alert to traffic hazards and dangers of the highway.
