Duties

Plans and administers the base sports program to include intramural, extramural, varsity sports and fitness programs. Solicits and selects volunteers and paid instructors for sports activities which could not be scheduled without such assistance. Determines adequacy of sports facilities and fitness equipment. Arranges for supplies and services needed to accomplish scheduled sports and fitness activities. Prepares publicity items, evaluates effectiveness of programs and varies programs in light of findings. Develops sports training program for newly assigned. Develops continuity book for intramural, extramural, varsity sports and fitness programming which includes instruction on sports scheduling for league and play-offs, proper format for letters of intent and by-laws for each sport and fundamentals in fitness training.

  • Individuals will work around chemicals, (such as Gas, detergents, oil and paint)
  • CPR and First Aid is a requirement
  • Individual must be able to lift 100 lbs
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft
  • Individual will also be required to work the front counter, issuing locker keys, equipment and issuing and washing towels for daily use. Will also sell retail from the retail store in the Fitness Center
  • Individual must maintain their certifications in fitness class instructor (I.E. aerobics, spin, yoga, etc.)
  • Individual must maintain their personnel trainer certificates, to meet the AF 5 Star Program
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance
  • A pre-employment physical is required

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, Recreation Aid and Assistant Series 0189. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-06, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge gained through relevant experience that enables the employee to competently and independently carry out continuing recreation and sports projects of programs through proper application of the principles, concepts, and techniques of recreation and fitness to the youth activities programs. Knowledge of the range of activities, sports, and services of participant interests and needs, and of the methods and processes involved in a typical and conventional youth activities program, which enables the employee to plan and conduct a variety of youth recreation activities, sports, and fitness services. OR EDUCATION: One (1) full year of graduate education with courses related to recreation or physical education such as Sports Management or Sports Science. Education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work of this position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-06 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of principles, concepts, procedures and techniques of sports management and fitness fundamentals. 2. Knowledge of standards of play and design for indoor and outdoor sports facilities. 3. Knowledge of safety and security regulations, practices and procedures. 4. Ability to plan, organize and manage the function of the program. 5. Skill in effectively organizing and utilizing all available resources within the program framework. 6. Knowledge of budgeting, inventory and supply principles. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
