Duties
This position is located in the Western Colorado Area Office, Resources Management Division, Southern Facility Maintenance Group, duty stationed at Navajo Dam, New Mexico. The incumbent performs a variety of duties involved in the operation and maintenance of the Navajo Dam and related structures.
Apply specific maintenance and repair procedures to install, test, adjust, maintain, and repair the equipment and machinery at the Dam.
Perform maintenance on hydraulic systems and structures including hydraulic oil changes, resetting pressure and thermal relief valves and mercoid switches, and trouble shooting systems.
As required, operate Ring Follower gates, Hollow Jet valves, Auxiliary gate, and Fixed Wheel gates in accordance with written procedures.
Monitor and maintain seepage areas and conducts manual and automated readings on the Dam.
Perform operation and maintenance of the dam including building and grounds maintenance, operation of heavy equipment, mowing, chemical spraying, painting, electrical, trash collection, concrete placement, plumbing, carpentry, water measurement, boat operation, and miscellaneous other duties.
Make electrical repairs by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, and loose connections and fittings.
PHYSICAL EFFORT
The position requires frequent handling of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. The work requires pushing, pulling, reaching, climbing, walking, standing, bending, and working in cramped positions over and under machinery and equipment, in tunnels, gate shafts, etc. Occasional carrying and lifting objects weighing over 80 pounds, running heavy power equipment, or pushing wheelbarrows of wet concrete. The work entails extensive climbing
and descending ladders in order to perform work throughout the dam. The work also entails the physical effort necessary for engineering equipment operation, including bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, fee, and legs to handle different sets of equipment controls.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a shop setting, inside tunnels, shafts, vaults, manholes, and outdoors in various types of weather conditions. Dirt, grease, and dampness are frequently encountered. Work is subject to vibration, noise, fumes, exhausts oils, dust heat rain cold and snow. The work involves some travel for training and working at other facilities throughout the office.
