This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service, Plains Area, at the Water Management Systems Research Unit in Fort Collins, CO. In this position, you will work as a part of a team by applying conventional technical and administrative solutions and practices to a variety of problems related to watershed management or hydrology research. This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 10 years

Duties

Designs, manages, and executes scientific investigations using watershed simulation model(s). Uses appropriate geographic information system (GIS) software and applications in assembling and analyzing data. Troubleshoots, diagnoses, analyzes, and identifies simulation models and model results to determine the source and cause of the problem. Develops revisions to standard hydrologic simulation model methods and procedures. Conducts analyses of collected data, with responsibility for recognizing and correcting errors, inconsistencies, and other deficiencies in the data.

Qualifications

GS-07 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience collecting and organizing research data; using computer simulation models to assist with research related to hydrology; conducting data analysis and studies related to watershed management or hydrology research. OR Education: One full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. Related degrees may include physics, agricultural engineering, biosystems engineering, agricultural systems management, agricultural systems technology, civil engineering, or environmental engineering. OR A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above. GS-08 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in one or more phases of a hydrology research process; summarizing and analyzing water resource data; and operating, maintaining, calibrating, or modifying watershed hydrologic simulation models. OR Education: Two full years of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. Related degrees may include physics, agricultural engineering, biosystems engineering, agricultural systems management, agricultural systems technology, civil engineering, or environmental engineering. OR A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above. GS-09 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-08 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience setting up and conducting an engineering experiment or research project related to hydrology or watershed; preparing, evaluating, and summarizing research data to create watershed simulation models; troubleshoot, diagnoses, and identify research results and data to determine the source and cause of the problem. OR Education: Two full years of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. Related degrees may include physics, agricultural engineering, biosystems engineering, agricultural systems management, agricultural systems technology, civil engineering, or environmental engineering. OR A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
