This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is responsible for providing technical support to the civil engineering staff.

Duties

Retrieves the pertinent information from many sources e.g., agency directives, field notes, standard and guide specification, including preliminary information prepared by others. Using established methods computes, tabulates, and analyzes quantities for the design of facilities, roads or related structures. Presents data using statistical and graphical standard methods. Distinguishes and reports errors, inconsistencies, and other deficiencies in technical data based on the knowledge of the applicability and use of the data and the methods by which it was derived. Collects related design, specification, and materials data pertinent to specific items. Summarizes data and prepares a written report using a predetermined format. Inspects a wide variety of standardized items or operations e.g., excavating, placing and compacting concrete, installation of standard electrical wiring, and plastering. Responsible for being knowledgeable of construction plans and specifications. Ensures that deliverables e.g. materials and equipment meet quality specifications. Inspects installation of mechanical equipment for interpreting certain requirement in drawings and construction specifications. Works closely with the COR and reports all inspection activities. Observes and inspects structures being constructed to ensure they meet acceptable standards and work practices. Inspects work in progress and upon completion to ensure an acceptable level of workmanship and compliance. Completes work assignments such as serving as instrument operator on high-order geodetic surveys or on varied, non-geodetic surveys such as location, right-of-way, and property surveys. Conduct survey work (horizontal and vertical); topographic mapping in broken terrain; and placement of construction materials, installation of equipment, and setting of structural members. May support senior engineer on simple construction or similar surveys that are of third or fourth order of accuracy and of limited scope and complexity.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards. Provide course descriptions as necessary. GS-06: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5). For the GS-06 position there is no substitution of education. Examples of specialized experience include: Work assisting higher-graded technicians and engineers who work in surveying and civil engineering specializations. Processing data according to well-defined methods and established formulas using mathematics, elementary algebra and geometry, and standard formulas. Operating and making operational adjustments to a variety of surveying and testing equipment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
