The position is located in the Office of Protection Services' Security Command Center (SCC), (a multi-function uninterrupted central system monitoring, reporting and dispatch facility consisting of a highly sophisticated computer-based Integrated Security Management System (ISMS)), Administrator’s Staff (A), of the National Gallery of Art.
Duties
The Apprentice Operator performs all SCC duties and tasks under the guidance and direction of the Supervisory SCC Operator and the Watch Commander on duty in the 24-hours-a-day 365-days-a-year SCC. The SCC Apprentice Operator ensures safety, security and appropriate environmental conditions for NGA visitors, staff and collections through consistent monitoring and response to systems, and maintaining situational awareness across all NGA facilities, grounds and access points. Monitors, acknowledges and immediately and accurately recognizes and interprets all alarms or unusual system readings, notifying supervisory staff and dispatching patrols to correct locations, providing patrols with clear and accurate information regarding an incident. During an emergency, takes appropriate action coordinating police and fire department responses. Performs SCC operational duties consistently and in compliance with SCC operational policies, rules, procedures, protocols and AOP General Orders. Completes required training, tests and certifications to maintain up-to-date knowledge of systems operations and procedures, and adapt to changes in systems operation, incident response or other SCC procedures. As assigned, performs the full range of Special Police Officer (SPO) duties that include performing a combination of guard and police duties related to protecting property, enforcing law and order, preserving the peace, preventing crime and detecting and investigating violations of the law within and on the perimeters of the National Gallery of Art. When performing these duties, incumbents are armed and commissioned as U.S. Special Police Officers, have arrest authority, and normally serve in uniform.

Qualifications
Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for GS-0085-6. This requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service which has involved (a) the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident or trespass OR (b) maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided knowledge of protective systems and techniques.Candidates must also meet the time-in-grade requirements of having been at the GS-5 level for at least one year within thirty (30) days of closing date of this vacancy announcement.Candidates must meet these criteria as well:
At least a 3.50 overall performance rating on the most recent NGA performance appraisal (Candidates who do not have an official NGA performance rating of record will be rated after they have served in the same position for a least ninety (90) consecutive days). Ability to perform all essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Successful completion of National Gallery Special Police Officer Training Course. A valid state or District of Columbia (DC) driver’s license. No domestic violence convictions (per Domestic Violence Amendment of Gun Control Act of 1968 “Lautenberg Amendment of 1996”).

Experience
General Experience (for positions at GS-4 and below): Experience such as administrative, technical, clerical, military, or other work that involved following written procedures, rules, or regulations in contacts with coworkers, supervisors, or members of the public to provide a service, respond to inquiries, or obtain information.
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis. For Security Guard positions in a hospital setting, experience as a psychiatric nursing assistant or a similar position safeguarding patients is qualifying.

Education/Training
Education: Successfully completed study at an accredited college or university in any subject is fully qualifying in the amount and level specified in the table.
Training: Successful completion of training in an accredited technical school that covered subjects such as physical security procedures, local laws, or investigative techniques is considered qualifying for specialized experience at the GS-4 level on a month-for-month basis.
