The Lieutenant position is located within the Operations department (AOP-OPS) of the Office of Protection Services (AOP), Administrator's Office, National Gallery of Art (NGA). The incumbents work under the supervision of the Shift Commander, GS-085-9/10, who provides direction on problems involving policy matters and procedures to be followed in situations not covered by precedent or regulations.

Qualifications
Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-0085-8.
Candidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the federal GS-7 level as a security officer, directing the activities of subordinate personnel in law enforcement and security patrols, procedures, and techniques.
Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria:
Lift and carry safety equipment that may weigh up to 20 lbs. such as a fire extinguisher. Wear an equipment belt consisting of a weapon, keys, flashlight, radio, and other items that may have a total weigh of 10 pounds during their tour of duty. Ascend and descend stairways, fixed vertical ladders, and spiral stairways. Walk patrols in low light areas, on uneven surfaces, in both the interior and exterior of the Gallery for up to 2 ½ hours continuously without a break. Push, pull, slide, or lift doors, hatches or gates that may weigh up to 60 lbs. Hear normal conversation, alarms, radio transmissions, extraneous noises, etc. Verbally transmit information during face-to-face situations with visitor, staff, and public safety personnel. Should also be able to verbally transmit information via portable radio and telephones. Climb over or crawl under fixed obstructions such as utility pipes, ventilation ducts and other objects in non-public areas. Move quickly throughout the facility to respond to emergency situations, such as chasing fleeing suspects or responding to alarms.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education
Education Requirements:
General Experience (for positions at GS-4 and below): Experience such as administrative, technical, clerical, military, or other work that involved following written procedures, rules, or regulations in contacts with coworkers, supervisors, or members of the public to provide a service, respond to inquiries, or obtain information.
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis. For Security Guard positions in a hospital setting, experience as a psychiatric nursing assistant or a similar position safeguarding patients is qualifying.

Education/Training
Education: Successfully completed study at an accredited college or university in any subject is fully qualifying in the amount and level specified in the table.
Training: Successful completion of training in an accredited technical school that covered subjects such as physical security procedures, local laws, or investigative techniques is considered qualifying for specialized experience at the GS-4 level on a month-for-month basis.
