You will serve as a SUPERVISORY HEALTH PHYSICIST in the ARMED FORCES RADIOBIOLOGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE (AFRRI), SAFETY AND HEALTH DEPARTMENT of UNIF SRVS UNI OF THE HLTH SCI. Duties

You will serve as the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) in the Health Physics Department at AFRRI, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland. You will directly report to AFRRI Director on all issues pertaining to the command’s Radioactive Materials Licenses in accordance with all NRC regulations. You will manage and administer AFRRIs Radiation Health Program in accordance with DoD Regulation, Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations and per the requirements of the NRC Licenses issued to AFRRI. You will conduct and coordinate dose investigations/estimates for personnel who have lost their dosimeters or have suspicious dosimetry results. You will administer daily operation of the radiation safety staff. You will evaluate performance of subordinates; develop performance standards; provides advice, counseling or instruction to employees on radiological and safety issues and administrative matters. You will keep abreast of management techniques and the latest developments in health physics and in NRC, DOT and EPA regulatory requirements. You will serve as an expert witness for AFRRI at litigation sessions, congressional hearings, or other Federal, State, and County functions of a political/legal nature. You will Inspect in areas of radiological health and safety, to provide input and review of procedures, instructions, facility upgrades, and new construction. You will manage and administer AFRRIs Radiation Safety Program under the auspices of three NRC licenses. You will serve as an expert witness for AFRRI at litigation sessions, congressional hearings, or other Federal, State, and County functions of a political/legal nature. You will inspect in areas of radiological health and safety, to provide input and review of procedures, instructions, facility upgrades, and new construction.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

  • You may be required to lift up to approximately 50 pounds.

  • The incumbent may be required to wear radiological protective clothing, dosimeter, and respiratory PPE in training exercises and emergencies, and may wear shoe covers, gloves and lab coat for specified operations.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional health physicist monitoring or investigating radiation safety matters to ensure compliance with federal regulations or permits. Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess
  1. Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
