This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Duties
The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab) RN works at the top of their licensure and provides direct nursing care to patients in Cath Lab procedural areas and the pre-op/recovery area and supports the interventional radiology nursing team as needed. They provide direct patient care to patients undergoing diagnostic, interventional, coronary, peripheral, and interventional radiology procedures in the Cath lab. The Cath Lab RN utilizes the nursing process to provide direct patient care, assessment, triage, and pre-procedure patient education in the pre-op/recovery area by preparing patients for Cath lab procedures and providing phase I and phase II recovery. They may also provide nursing support via care management, scheduling and use of Veterans Video Connect (VVC) capabilities to communication and provide care coordination and management.
Major duties:
- Provides pre-procedure care, including pre-procedure assessment, review of medications, documentation, and patient preparation for the procedure, including obtaining IV access.
- Makes pre-procedure phone calls to patients and collaborates with care managers and providers to ensure that patients know and follow all pre-procedure instructions.
- Provides post-procedure care to patients in the Cath Lab recovery area for patients in both Phase I and Phase II recovery.
- Communicates with the physician on an ongoing basis about the patient`s condition and medication for the procedure.
- Assess procedures rooms and pre-op/recovery area for equipment functioning and readiness before procedures and patient care.
- Hemodynamically monitor, position, and assist patients during procedures and perform immediate post-procedural recovery care.
- Demonstrate proficiency in hemodynamic monitoring, management/support of intra-aortic balloon pump insertion and operation, and electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation, moderate sedation administration, and hemodynamic/cardiac medication/drip administration.
- Prepares, monitors, and recovers patients prior to, and following, invasive Cardiac Cath Lab procedures, including continuous ECG and hemodynamic monitoring, identification of cardiac arrhythmias, response to medications, titration of vasoactive IV medications, and hemodynamic assist devices such as intra-aortic balloon pumps and ventricular assist devices.
- Performs removal of intra-arterial and intra-venous sheaths, including TR Band removal, with monitoring of vital signs and attainment of hemostasis.
- Administers medications, including ACLS medications, anticoagulants, sedatives, pain medications, antibiotics, and hemodynamic medications/drips.
- Administers moderate sedation with appropriate patient monitoring, assessment, and documentation.
- Maintains knowledge of the functioning of all technological equipment in the Cath lab, including, but not limited to the transvenous pacemakers and the IABP. - Transports patients pre and post procedure following hospital policies.
- Participates and functions independently with Cath Lab projects and Quality Improvement.
- Participates in the ordering and maintenance of an adequate inventory.
- Participates in the scheduling of Cath Lab patients and consult management.
- Participates in policy and procedure formation, maintains current knowledge of the Joint Commission (TJC) requirements, and significantly contributes to their annual proficiency data.
- Participates in assigned hospital committees and provides collegial teaching to staff outside the Cath lab, including nursing students and nurse residents.
- Orients and precepts new Cath Lab staff.
- Participates in care management of the Cath Lab's patient population, including patient teaching.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD).
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements, but do not possess the required licensure, may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.)
NOTE: Grandfathering Provision - All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification.

Physical Requirements: Includes, but not limited to:
- Involves considerable amount of standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and turning.
