These positions is located in the Environmental and Support Service of the Edward Hines Jr. VAMC, Hines, IL. The Housekeeping Supervisor inspects work in progress and takes necessary action to implement improvements or corrective actions to resolve work problems within assigned authority; recommends solutions to staffing problems; engineering requirements; and work operations directed by other supervisors.

Duties

The Supervisor is responsible for supervising subordinate employees WG-3566 -1 through WG-3566-3, and a team leader WL-2 in the performance of all housekeeping operations, including dusting, dust mopping, wet mopping, lavatory cleaning, floor stripping, wall washing, carpet shampooing, etc. The Supervisor is accountable to the section Chief, operations, and projects designated to the assigned group, including the meeting of quality and quantity standards. The Supervisor's work is subject to spot checks during or upon completion of assignments, but to a large extent the incumbent acts on his/her own responsibility. Supervises housekeeping workers WG-1 through WG-2 with oversight responsibility for all assignments. Incumbent may assume limited supervision of all housekeeping personnel during absences of the section chief. May be called upon to act as a representative of the section chief for administrative functions. Supervises housekeeping functions throughout medical center (all buildings) on the assigned shift. Makes decisions on policy execution, reacts to changes in workload and adjusts resources as necessary. Plans & implements methods of accomplishment of work assignments. The Supervisor conducts training for subordinate employees consisting of housekeeping techniques and procedures; contact with and relationships with medical center patients, hospital visitors, and hospital staff; basic bacteriology; personal hygiene; EEO; Sexual Harassment; MSDS; Hazardous Chemicals and the Right To Know Law; Waste Management; and Universal Precautions. In this regard , conducts new employee orientation. The Supervisor daily, evaluates the performance of subordinate employees, determines training needs, recommends reassignments or promotions and conducts formal appraisals in accordance with the Performance Appraisal System. The Supervisor suggests ways and implements plans in which subordinates' performance can be improved. Supervisor also advises and consults employees on their performance. The Supervisor handles informal complaints from employees concerning any decisions affecting work, consulting with the Associate Facilities Manager on the more difficult decisions. The Supervisor plans leave schedules, identifies leave abuses, suggests corrective measures and recommends personnel actions, as needed. Approves time in the absence of the section chief. The Supervisor prepares written inspection reports of all areas under his/her jurisdiction. The Supervisor prepares and submits reports on work accomplishments, manpower utilization and material consumption. The Supervisor requisitions supplies, materials and tools as required. The Supervisor submits work orders and follows up on completion dates. Incumbent fully supports the station EEO policies and educates his/her subordinates in all aspects of the program, including upward mobility and sexual harassment. Uses DHCP for work orders and time cards. Work Schedule: Days subject to need of service , 6:00 AM-230PM. Position Description Title/PD#: Housekeeping Aid Supervisor/PD02246A Physical Requirements: Continuous standing, bending, stooping, working, climbing ladders, and heavy pushing when removing trash, soiled linen, mopping, wall washing, cleaning vents, light fixtures, etc. Frequently lifts or moves objects up to 50 pounds. Visual acuity must be sufficient to see dust, dirt, and cobwebs. Working Conditions: Work is usually performed in a well-lighted, well-heated building with generally favorable working conditions but, at times, subjected to disagreeable odors, infectious materials, and other environmental conditions prevailing in a medical and surgical hospital. Incumbent must be alert to safety hazards, as well as observing and practicing safe procedures and universal precautions, when working with and around potentially contaminated areas.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Ability to supervise housekeeping aids. Your background must demonstrate experience performing routine Housekeeping Aid or Custodian techniques, procedures and functions, under normal supervision, and includes working cooperatively, mostly as a member of a group, but may have lead or supervised a small group of workers to complete a specific assignment or project. Performing duties such as working in the intensive care unit, patient isolation, emergency room, removing infectious waste, spot washing soiled walls, mopping floors, washing beds, cleaning bathrooms and cleaning equipment for the purpose of cleanliness, storage, and inventory. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
