This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Mission Support Positions (STRL) to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: The Chemical Biological Center (CBC) is the nation's principal research and development resource for non-medical chemical and biological defense.
Duties
Plans and conducts various tests to determine agent permeability of protective materials.
Plans approach and details, and conducts various experimental projects to develop interfacing systems for use in the automation of data acquisition from laboratory instrumentation such as:
free standing flame ionization, flame photometric, and Hall electrolytic conductivity detectors used in the evaluation of protective charcoal.
Studies and analyzes unsatisfactory characteristics of available systems.
Evaluates system performance in terms of the practical suitability for inclusion in the mainstream of laboratory data management.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Secret Security Clearance required.
- Business travel (TDY) may be required up to 15% of the time.
- Position requires random drug testing and medical evaluation IAW AR 50-1 and/or AR 50-6.
- This position requires recurring lifting of light to moderately heavy items weighing less than 50 pounds such as testing or measuring equipment.
- Pre-employment physical required.
- One year trial period may be required.
- Position requires certification in the Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) and/or the Chemical Personnel Reliability Program (CPRP), IAW AR 50-1 and/or AR 50-6.
- Required to wear special protective clothing and use protective equipment.
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Planning and conducting various tests to determine agent permeability of protective materials; and 2) Setting up, programming, maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting permeation analyzers; and 3) Treating and packaging toxic waste resulting from agent penetration testing. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade level/position in the federal service (GS-10).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this position, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
