This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. This pharmacist primarily functions as the overnight and / or evening pharmacist in the inpatient pharmacy, working the of tours. This pharmacist maintains full in-depth Pharmacy services with regard to disease state management, drug distribution, drug information, and pharmaceutical education to patients and other health care staff in inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory care areas. He/she will maintain an exceptional level of competence through self-study and continuing education. Functions will include but not be limited to drug regimen review, assessment, patient interview, counseling, clinical interventions as needed with the health care providers, interpretation of provider orders, dispensing of medications, compounding IV, chemotherapy, biologics, and hazardous drugs according to the most recent guidelines, counseling patients on proper use of medication, administration, drug information, and storage. This pharmacist may function as a preceptor for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy students. The pharmacist may participate in programs such as Medication Use Evaluation, Adverse Drug Reporting, Drug Information, acute care rounding, and other areas as assigned.
Clinical
Provides drug information to the Medical Center staff concerning proper drug selection, optimal dosage and route of administration, recognition and management of drug interactions and reactions, and proper handling and storage of medications. Engages in direct and/or supportive patient care for an aging adult population, which requires knowledge, skills and consideration for specific patient conditions. Provides patient education and information on the drugs prescribed upon discharge from the hospital and upon ambulatory care clinic visits. Effectively documents pharmaceutical care in a timely and accurate manner.
Dispensing
Dispenses medication upon computer-generated orders or written orders of providers, in accordance with dosage form requirements. (Outpatient, unit dose, intravenous admixtures, chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, etc.). Inputs and/or verifies information into the computer system for outpatient, unit-dose, ward stock, and intravenous admixture programs. Receives and verifies VA Community Care prescriptions for proper eligibility. Enters properly authorized VACC orders in the VISTA package to process and fill or handles as a non-formulary medication as required. Contacts VACC provider if a change is required or if the non-formulary request is denied and advises the VACC provider of a clinically appropriate replacement.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Education:
Participates in the education of VA/Texas Tech postgraduate Pharmacy Residents, undergraduate pharmacy students, and Amarillo College pharmacy technician students as assigned. Accepts responsibility for obtaining sufficient formal continuing education to maintain state licensure. Due to the nature of the position, the incumbent will be expected to maintain a self-study program sufficient to ensure his/her continued competence in sophisticated clinical decision-making regarding appropriate drug utilization in the clinic setting. Assists in the training of new personnel with routine job duties. Orients, trains, and/or instructs employees and students from TTU/AC in specific tasks as assigned. Participates in delivering a continuing education program for staff pharmacists, aimed at maintaining state licensure, continuing competence in an ever-changing pharmaceutical environment, and encouraging further use and development of clinical skills.
Research:
Assists in organization and coordination of Pharmacy Service participation in investigational drug studies when assigned.
Program Management:
Completes quality assurance audits of clinical programs, drug distribution systems, controlled substance records, and other areas of Pharmacy Service as assigned. Observes stock levels on a daily basis and assists purchasing agent with ordering by maintaining a list of items needed. Receives controlled substances and enters into stock in accordance with VA Regulations. Incumbent is aware of the goal of Pharmacy Service and the Medical Center and strives to attain those goals.

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education:
(1) Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.
(2) Graduates of foreign pharmacy degree programs meet the educational requirement if the graduate is able to provide proof of achieving the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Commission (FPGEC) Certification, which includes passing the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT).
Licensure: Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. The pharmacist must maintain current registration if this is a requirement for maintaining full, current, and unrestricted licensure.
English Language Proficiency: Pharmacists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d)
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
GS-11 Pharmacist
Experience, Education, and Licensure: None beyond the basic requirements.
GS-12 Clinical Pharmacist (Full Performance Level)
Experience or Education. In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must meet one of the following:
1.1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, or
2. Completion of an ACPE-accredited Pharm.D. program.
Pharmacists assigned to this position must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs):
1. Knowledge of professional pharmacy practice.
2. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to both patients and health care staff.
3. Knowledge of laws, regulations, and accreditation standards related to the distribution and control of scheduled and non-scheduled drugs and pharmacy security.
4. Skill in monitoring and assessing the outcome of drug therapies, including physical assessment and interpretation of laboratory and other diagnostic parameters.
