Duties

Serve as a member of a four-to-six-person crew responsible for responding to fires, hazardous materials and confined space incidents, and accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses Direct and participate in the work of a firefighting/Hazardous Materials crew. Provide fire protections/prevention duties, care and maintenance of all firefighting and Hazardous Materials apparatus and equipment, building inspections, and testing of fire extinguishing equipment and systems. Direct and/or participate as a member of a medical response team providing basic life support during emergencies involving injury and illnesses. Follows protocols in providing emergency, noninvasive medical care as ambulance driver/emergency medical technician. Serves as the base primary hazardous material spill and weapons of mass destruction response team. Determine measures to reduce or eliminate the potential for fire or explosion.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 48-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
  • This position requires certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation with Automatic External Defibrillator training.
  • This position requires the incumbent to operate an Emergency Vehicle and must successfully complete the Emergency Vehicle Operator's Course.
  • The duty of this position requires the incumbent to be subject to callback in unforeseen emergencies.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime. This position performs, as required, mutual aid support to local fire departments.
  • The incumbent of this position must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • GS-07: You must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the following DoD or Pro-Board Firefighter Certification, Driver Operator Aerial within 18 months of being appointed. See Additional Info below.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience at the GS-05: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) Utilizing and maintaining firefighting equipment; (2) Applying basic first aid; and (3) Participating in firefighting and rescue situations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education Substitution: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study from an accredited college or university with a major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You must have the specialized experience as described above, but less than one year; and you must have more than one year but less than the required education described above. You must compute the percentage of the requirements that you meet, and your total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education over one year by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) Specialized Experience at the GS-06: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) Performing standard firefighting techniques; (2) Responding to basic hazardous incidents; and (3) Performing basic first responder medical care. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). Specialized experience required for the GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) Performing structural firefighting duties, including controlling and extinguishing fires and/or rescue operations; (2) Providing basic life support; (3) Responding to and mitigating hazardous materials incidents; and (4) Driving and operating firefighting apparatus, such as, pumpers and aerial ladder trucks. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Certificates: You MUST submit a copy of the following certification requirements certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) AND a State or National Registry EMT License or equivalent State issued EMT - Basic license. GS- 05: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations CPR certification GS-06: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations, Driver Operator-Pumper, Current National Registry or equivalent State issued Emergency Medical Technician - Basic license. GS-07: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Driver Operator Pumper, Hazardous Materials Technician, Current National Registry or equivalent State issued EMT - Basic license. NOTE: For the GS-07 level, the Driver Operator Aerial certification is not required for the Silver Springs, MD location. Education

Note: Education can only be substituted at the GS-05 grade level but not for the GS-06 or GS-07 grade levels.
