This position is located at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center (PIMC) in Phoenix, Arizona. The purpose of this position is to serve as a clinical specialist in Pediatric Dentistry to provide dental service to the designated population in accordance with Indian Health Service policies.
This is an Intermittent / part-time position and not a full-time position.
Duties
Service Unit Clinical Responsibilities: Responsible for provisions of specialty services in Pediatric Dentistry to the patients of the Phoenix Service Unit, and to patients being treated when visiting other service units. Services include, but are not limited to:
Diagnostic services, through the use of history, radiographs, examination, diagnostic models and other appropriate tests.
Complex restoration of teeth lost to severe and rampant caries, periodontal disease, and trauma to the oral cavity and supporting structures.
Emergency services, including the treatment of trauma, pain and infection.
Travel to other service units in the Phoenix Area to provide pediatric dental services that would otherwise result in referral and provide site consultation and training to other less experienced dental staff.
Phoenix Area Responsibilities:
Participates in the planning, development and implementation of an area-wide pediatric dentistry program appropriate to the Phoenix Area Indian Health Service.
As a consultant, will provide technical guidance for Service Unit dentists in the development and operation of direct and contract pediatric dentistry programs. Travels to other service unit periodically to assist in this duty.
Provides continuing dental education through "Challenges Courses" to enable Area dental staff to incorporate pediatric treatment and management procedures.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Education: Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Medical Requirement: Applicant must be able to distinguish shades of color.
In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION, GS-0680-13:Completion of a 3-year residency program in Pediatric dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science.
OR
Your resume must demonstrate at least 3 years of professional Pediatric dentistry experience and/or training. This experience is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement.Examples of Pediatric dentistry experience includes:Ensure direct pediatric dental services are provided that are of quality and quantity consistent with policies, plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, administer local anesthesia, perform extractions of teeth, perform oral surgery.
Board Certified or Board Eligible candidates in Pediatric Dentistry (Pedodontics) is highly preferred, but not required.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
