Duties

The Supervisory Police Officer is located in the Office of Protection Services for the Smithsonian Institution. This position provides supervision and manages the National Zoological Park (NZP) and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) police and physical security programs.

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATION: Experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. In addition to the Basic qualifications, this position requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the NZ-09 level in the Federal service. Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the NZ-09 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as: Planning, coordinating, and assigning work to staff based on priorities. Making recommendations to the Commanding Officer regarding staffing requirements, performance standards, policies, and procedures. Rating and reviewing the performance of police personnel; AND Coordinating incident command with various emergency response organizations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Investigation of Fitness: A character investigation shall be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government.
