The incumbent serves in a developmental role as one of a group of Claims Adjustment Technicians who, as a regular and recurring part of their assignment, lead three or more employees in accomplishing work in determining entitlement and amount of Government Life Insurance payable under the USGLI, NSLI, VSLI, VRI and SDVI programs.

Duties

Major Duties: Knowledge of VA Life Insurance Program laws, rules, regulations, processes and procedures. Ability to access, interpret and input information into the Insurance operating system Calculate the correct amount of basic insurance plus any paid-up additions, dividends, and premiums payable on the policy as well as determine the correct amount of any loans or liens again the policy. Ability to lead and assist others in the processing and completion of work. Provide technical assistance to lower graded Claims Adjustment Technicians (CAT'S) on a variety of difficult cases involving manual computer inputs and complex calculations. Conduct case reviews on lower-graded employees, as assigned, to assist the supervisor in conducting his/her monthly performance review. Report to supervisor on performance, progress, and training needs of employees, and/or performance problems; and provide information to the supervisor, as requested.

Qualifications

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are/were federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5 level. To support your claim of time in grade, you must submit your most recent appointment, promotion, or within grade increase SF-50 (not an award or general adjustment SF-50). Some applicants may have to submit more than one SF-50 to demonstrate their eligibility. See the required documents section for more information. Specialized Experience: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. To qualify, applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-5) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is defined as work that involves (1) Developing materials for various types of claims for benefits; (2) Maintaining files and documents for claims processing; (3) Using computer systems to input data; (4) Responding to congressional inquiries and/or freedom of information acts requests (FOIA); (5) Determining eligibility related to benefits or privileges and preparing entitlement letters for such benefits. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education

There is no educational substitution for the GS-6 level.
