About the Position: This position is located at Fort Novosel, Alabama, home of the United States Army Aviation Center of Excellence. Fort Novosel is located in the "Wiregrass" area in Southeast Alabama, surrounded by Enterprise, Ozark and Daleville. The geography and climate are ideal for year-round military training. Recreation activities are abundant in the immediate and surrounding areas for family and fun.

Duties

Conduct training of firefighters in basic fire inspection methods to keep them abreast of fire regulations. Provide installation-wide fire prevention training, lectures and demonstrations to educate patrons on fire safety. Inspect fuel storage areas, public assemblies, aircraft maintenance shops, hangars, warehouses, barracks, administrative buildings, and ammunition areas. Maintains files of fire inspections by area and building numbers, posts deficiencies that are found during scheduled inspections so follow up inspections can be made to assure deficiencies are corrected. Explain fire codes to help design professionals, contractors and others avoid code violations. Keep current on alarm systems, building construction, National Fire Codes, National Electrical Codes, Life Safety Code, and all Army regulations. Establish fire safety programs for incoming personnel and installation activities to inform them of fire prevention techniques. Provide team support of fire suppression to ensure all structural and non-structural fires are controlled and extinguished. Operate firefighting equipment (e.g. fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, mechanized equipment, and ladders) to suppress and extinguish fires.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position has been designated “Mission Essential”. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support.
  • Incumbent must be able to pass a pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoDi 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • This position requires heavy physical lifting up to 45 pounds, climb ladders up to 100 feet and climb in and over obstacles and move charged fire hose lines.
  • This position is an inclement weather position.
  • This position is subject to recall for all firefighting emergencies.
  • This position is subject to wear a uniform and/or protective clothing.
  • This position requires the employee to work 60-hour work-week to include one 24 hour shift a week.
  • This position requires that the incumbent possess and maintain the following Department of Defense (DoD), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Professional Qualifications System (Pro-Board) issued certifications.
  • This position requires that the incumbent possess and maintain the following Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, Fire Inspector I, Fire Inspector II, and Fire Instructor I.

Firefighter (Secondary) Special Retirement Coverage This position has been identified by Department of Army and approved by the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness as a secondary position for special retirement coverage as identified in 5 CFR 831 Subpart I for CSRS Retirement coverage and 5 CFR 842 Subpart H for FERS retirement coverage. Coverage under Special Retirement Coverage is NOT automatic. However, an employee may bring their existing special retirement coverage with them if they meet the transfer requirements below. CSRS - Per CSRS and FERS Handbook, Subchapter 46A, Section 46A3.2-1C - The employee, while covered under the special provision, moves directly (that is, without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position; and if applicable, the employee has been continuously employed in a secondary position or positions since moving from a rigorous position without a break in service exceeding 3 days FERS - Per CSRS and FERS Handbook, Subchapter 46B, Section 463.2-1C 1.
