The Northport VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for the Motor Vehicle Operator (Laundry) position assigned to the Environmental Management Service.
Duties
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Is responsible for the pick-up and delivery of clean and soiled laundry throughout the Medical Center.
Loads and unloads linen carts, unpacks new linen, marks new linen, delivers linen to the Unit from the clean linen room, delivers uniforms, folds clean linen, and performs other related duties.
Loads laundry baskets, linen racks, hampers, uniform racks at designated points and delivers to designated points. He/she must know all pick up mid delivery schedule for every patient unit and using service.
Coordinates the activities with the washroom and shipping section of the Laundry Section.
Advises and assists the Laundry Worker Foreman in making necessary changes and improvements in routine scheduling and delivering.
Responsible for delivering all Medical Center linen by enclosed cart directly to each patient unit and using areas.
Prepared carts are delivered to the linen room on the unit and the empty cart returned to the laundry.
All soiled linen will be picked up from a collection point in each building, either from the unit proper or the soiled linen chute room.
Incumbent must know the proper days for pick up from the unit or other designated areas.
Deliver all patient clothing to the proper patients' units.
Delivery of all employee's uniforms are made to the appropriate locker room or designated areas.
In the performance of his/her assigned duties, the incumbent will operate station vehicles with a gross weight of less than 22, 000 pounds and capable of carrying loads up to four tons for the primary purpose of transporting line, employee uniforms, patient's personal clothing within the grounds of the Medical Center.
Will perform operator maintenance such as tightening and loosening connections, checking oil, battery and cooling system levels. When unusual noise or operation defect is noticed, it will be reported to the immediate supervisor.
Coordinates other maintenance functions such as tune-ups, check brakes and any needed repairs with the appropriate personnel in Engineering Service.
May be required to travel between New York Harbor Healthcare System campuses- Manhattan, Brooklyn and St. Albans (Queens)

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent must take into consideration the physical limitations of the young adult, middle adult and the geriatric patient when performing all assigned responsibilities. Light physical effort is required in reaching, bending, climbing, and driving while hands, arms, and legs operate the motor vehicle. Moderate physical effort is required in the frequent bending of clean and soiled linen. Incumbent is required to push heavy carts and lift laundry bags in excess of 50 pounds.
