About the Position: This position is with the Defense Health Agency. It is located at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Fort Eisenhower in Augusta, Georgia. The primary purpose is to serve as paralegal specialist and administrative support specialist for DHA's Military Treatment Facility (MTF). Plan and carry out assignments and coordinate activities with the professional legal staff of the office, command and with the staff of other DoD agencies.

Duties

Perform fact finding, research, and analysis on assignments as directed by attorneys on a variety of legal subjects. Accept service of legal documents (including subpoenas, production requests, freedom of information act requests, and interrogatories). Process requests for private medical information from law offices (military and civilian), military commanders, insurance companies, law enforcement agencies, individuals, or injured parties. Process, review, analyze, coordinate, and investigate administrative law, healthcare law, labor law, and Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)/Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) actions. Identify, coordinate, and communicate with personnel responsible to file Public Financial Disclosure Report(OGE 278) and the Confidential Financial Disclosure Report (OGE 450). Assist with the administration of the Region Gift program. Receive office visitors and telephone calls, determines the nature of inquiries and refers to the appropriate office. Prepare and review contents of legal documents such as witness requests, appeals, powers of attorney, affidavits, etc. Conduct legal analysis to prepare for legal opinions, legal memoranda, and briefs. Perform general administrative duties such as retrieving files, cataloguing opinions, maintaining electronic and hardcopy files, determining appropriate means of document delivery to meet deadlines and ensure timely delivery.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience assisting in interpreting laws, regulations, and/or other guidance; and experience reviewing principles, concepts, and/or methods of legal research and analysis; and experience interviewing potential witnesses and/or other clients; and experience preparing legal papers and conducting summaries of legal analysis. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Legal Studies, Criminal Justice, Law, Juris Doctorate. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
