This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Textual Records Division, Reference Research Rooms and Augmented Processing Branch within Research Services under the Chief Operating Officer. As an archivist, the incumbent will carry out complex professional assignments involving reference, processing, description, and other related activities pertaining to textual holdings of the National Archives.
Duties
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As an Archivist, you will:
Independently develop and deliver responses to non-routine reference requests that draw upon a broad knowledge of records, involve multiple sources of information, employ innovative research techniques, or require interpretation of complex rules or procedures.
Contribute significantly to the planning and creating of finding aids.
Assist researchers in navigating complex finding aid systems and establishing connections between related archival sources, regardless of their physical location.
Consult with researchers regarding the most effective approach for each specific project and recommends materials applicable to their study.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For the GS-9 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Researching and/or reporting on archival records; AND
Utilizing various systems or databases to locate and/or analyze archival records; AND
Collaborating on a team or project.
OR
2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.
For the GS-07, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Utilizing various systems or databases to locate archival records; AND
Performing archival functions, such as researching and/or managing documents; AND
Communicating with internal and external stakeholder on archival records.
OR
1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F):
For the GS-09, you must have been at the GS-07level for 52 weeks.
For the GS-07, you must have been at the GS-05level for 52 weeks.
Education
Individual Occupational Requirement
Education Requirements: This basic requirement must be met by all grades, in addition to the above.
Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.
OR
Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
