We expect to fill four vacancies at this time; however, additional positions may be filled from this announcement if they become available.

Duties

These positions serve as Park Rangers in the Color Country District, Paria River District, and West Desert District. Conducts patrols and monitoring visitor use activities in designated Wilderness areas. Performs day to day operations and minor maintenance tasks at developed fee sites, dispersed camping sites, motorized and non-motorized trails and trailheads. Advises visitors about safety, fire prevention, public land etiquette, and authorized uses of recreational facilities. Coordinates and supports volunteers and volunteer projects. Assists with fee collection activities, maintaining fee accounting records, and submitting deposits. Assists with management of Special Recreation Permit program, monitoring competitive events and authorized permit activities. Presents a positive image of the BLM and conducting visitor contacts in a courteous, professional, and friendly manner. Demonstrates general knowledge of agency policies and objectives related to the management of special designation areas.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified: Must possess (or obtain within 30 days of entrance on duty) and maintain a valid state driver's license. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. To qualify at the GS-5 level you must meet one of the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Qualifying specialized experience includes: working in as a park guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; or management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. -OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have 4-year course study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work. -OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. To qualify at the GS-7 level you must meet one of the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Qualifying specialized experience includes: coordinating and organizing work projects for volunteers; presenting technical and/or nontechnical information to a variety of audiences; planning day to day operation of a recreation area providing such facilities as camping, picnic areas, or coordinating routine activities; using computer systems to retrieve input, manipulate data, write and run reports; inspecting, and monitoring compliance of recreation areas or similar operations; and collecting fees and processing permits. -OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have 18 semester hours of graduate education in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. -OR Combination of Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualifications requirements. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level. Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.
