The Oncology Nurse Practitioner (NP) is expected to execute position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex patient care. S/he demonstrates Leading and organizing delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning.
Duties
Position responsibilities are and not limited to: Using advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes, Functioning as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities, Systematically evaluating current practice, and formulating outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise, Guiding, developing, and supporting staff from a leadership perspective, and using professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs and/or service activities. The Nurse practitioner is an expert nurse who demonstrates expertise in leadership at the systems level that is sustainable.
The Oncology NP is responsible for evaluating and recommending treatment for patients presenting to the Oncology Clinic utilizing nationally approved guidelines and standards of care.
The care of patients includes conducting a history and physical examination, formulating diagnoses, and ordering diagnostic testing as appropriate.
The Oncology NP will communicate findings to the Oncologist through documentation and consultation as needed.
The Oncology NP may also be asked to provide preventative care according to standard guidelines for medical and nursing care.
The NP collects and synthesizes patient data utilizing critical thinking skills to formulate a comprehensive plan of care. Care is provided to patients with the goal of achieving quality patient care by improving clinical outcomes, increasing continuity of care and minimizing health care costs.
The NP is expected to perform data collection and analysis for improving care to patient groups, maximizing utilization of resources, and enhancing overall patient care.
The NP assignment is with the Specialty Medicine Department at the Chalmers P. Wylie Veterans Ambulatory Care Center. The NP will evaluate a broad spectrum of oncologic conditions for patients in the Oncology Clinic throughout the VA Central Ohio Healthcare System. Responsibilities include but are not limited to completing history and physical examinations and ordering diagnostic testing as appropriate to evaluate patients undergoing consultation in the Oncology Clinic. The NP is responsible and accountable for the care s/he provides. Patient care standards are identical to those followed by all Oncology Providers.
S/he must possess the skills needed to effectively work with others, to communicate directions, and offer assistance. The NP will consult with and refer to an Oncologist or designee as appropriate and necessary.
The NP reports directly to the Oncology Section Chief. It is the Oncology Section Chief or designee, who has direct control over work assignments and leave approval. Collaboration regarding clinical practice will be in consult with the Oncologists and/or Oncology Section Chief. The NP is expected to work independently within his/her scope of practice, according to policies, training, and accepted VA practice. Annual proficiency reviews will be conducted by the Oncology Section Chief in collaboration with the Associate Director for Patient Care Service/Nurse Executive.
The NP meets the needs of both the internal and external customers while supporting the mission of the VA by consistently communicating and treating customers Veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education:
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant. [NOTE: See exception in subparagraph (b) below for candidates who are enrolled in a MSN Bridge Program.]
The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), previously known as the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)
OR
The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. In these programs, students are given a certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX and should submit this certification to VA prior to appointment. Students do not earn a BSN, but receive a MSN degree upon completion of course work. A copy of the MSN transcript must be provided to VA. Bridge programs that confer a master's degree also fully meet the education requirement, even though a Bachelor's Degree is not awarded.
OR
In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Registration: A registered nurse (RN) will have a current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The appointing official may waive this registration if the RN is to serve in a country other than the U.S. and the RN has registration in that country (e.g., Philippines). The RN must maintain a current, full, active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with VA.
English Language Proficiency: RNs appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I
An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II
An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience;
OR
An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience;
OR
A Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III
An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience;
OR
An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience;
OR
A BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience;
OR
A Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II
A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience;
OR
ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience;
OR
A Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience;
OR
A Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III
Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience;
OR
A Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience
Nurse Practitioners: A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. [The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.
Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. S/he may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. S/he must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Applicants must possess the mental and physical ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment. Physical requirements may involve lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, and repeated bending. S/he must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as TB screening or testing on hire, as a condition of employment .
