The primary purpose of this position is to perform work involved in the identification, examination, classification, acceptance, and disposition of a wide variety of materials, complete equipment items, technical components, parts, and commodities. The position requires the use of fork lift trucks.

Duties

- Receives, examines, verifies, and identifies a wide variety of materials, complete equipment items, technical components, parts, and commodities. Receives and inspects new items and verifies against contracts, purchase orders, and/or government specifications. - Inspects stored/on-hand property for proper identification and usability conditions. Performs inspection of on hand items/assets for serviceability standards, deterioration, shelf-life, and damage. - Receives, examines, and determines condition of items, components, and equipment to be turned in/removed. Establishes and maintains the final identification and classification of items turned in and assigns proper action codes Examines/inspects items, disassembling as needed, for hidden defects, rust, defective equipment seals, missing parts, excessive wear, and repairing/servicing requirements (e.g., cleaning, painting, and adjustments) to determine appropriate classification disposition (salvage, condemn, reutilization, etc.). - Performs a broad range of materials handling assignments/activities, such as receiving, storing, selecting, and shipping general or specialized bulk and bin materials and equipment. Performs receiving and storage assignments: unloads incoming shipments, scans bar codes, and/or keys receipt information into automated record system; groups items together based on receiving voucher information or segregates items according to such factors as condition and type of transaction; builds pallet loads to facilitate storage; transports materials from receiving areas to storage; stores, stacks, palletizes, and/or rotates items considering their use, size, shape, quantity, and special handling requirements; consolidates and arranges items in accordance with the warehouse plan, keeping aisles and other traffic areas clear of obstructions; and uses automated equipment to move, stack, bin, and select storage locations of items being shipped or received or to inquire on status of items. - Operates electric, LPG, or diesel powered fork lift trucks capable of lifting loads weighing less than 10,000 pounds as high as 168 inches. Maneuvers vehicle to load, unload, move, and place materials and equipment in narrow warehouse aisles, and on railroad cars, trucks, planes, etc. Uses and maintains tools and equipment. Uses various measuring devices, such as depth, thread, and wire gauges and calipers, to inspect/examine materials and equipment for adherence to contract and government specifications. Utilizes safety and security practices and procedures following established rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work area. Ensures that established procedures and regulations for warehouse safety and security are followed.

  • This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program.

  • The physical requirements of this position as determined by the manager are: The work requires moderate to heavy lifting when moving material by hand or handtruck; walking and standing for prolonged periods of time and bending,
  • stooping, and pushing and pulling heavy material along conveyor lines. The materials handling work may require working on hard surfaces and lifting and carrying weights up to 40 pounds. May handle heavier items with weight lifting equipment
  • or with assistance from other workers. Moderate physical effort is required in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls while driving, raising, lowering, and tilting fork lift trucks.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the 6912-Materials Examining And Identifying family . Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of the positin without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of a limited range of parts and equipment, such as machine tools, office machines, electrical and electronic components, or medical supplies. 2. Knowledge of magnetic, spark, and chemical tests to test metal components of unusable equipment for salvage purposes. 3. Knowledge of electronic and mechanical devices to separate equipment components prior to testing. 4. Knowledge of safety and security practices and procedures. 5. Knowledge of supply documentation, code numbers and coding practices, printouts, material conditions, and stock numbering systems. 6. Knowledge of accepted warehousing functions, material handling techniques, and inventory procedures ( e.g., material receiving, storage, issuing, and preservation) and preparation of inventory and production reports. Knowledge of warehouse configurations, storage requirements for particular commodities, and storage documentation requirements. Skill in using hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, and other hand tools to unpack or disassemble equipment. Skill in operating one or more electric, diesel, gasoline, or LPG fork lift trucks with a capacity of less than I 0,000 pounds and a lift reach of up to 168 inches to move, stack, unstack, load, and unload materials in and about warehouses, storage areas, loading docks, and vehicles. Ability to identify and sort a limited number of basic metals such as copper, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and bronze. Ability to interpret and apply instructions, specifications, technical manuals, operating manuals, drawings, and blueprints. Physical Effort The work requires moderate to heavy lifting when moving material by hand or handtruck; walking and standing for prolonged periods of time; and bending, stooping, and pushing and pulling heavy material along conveyor lines. The materials handling work may require working on hard surfaces and lifting and carrying weights up to 40 pounds. May handle heavier items with weight lifting equipment or with assistance from other workers. Moderate physical effort is required in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls while driving, raising, lowering, and tilting fork lift trucks. Working Conditions Work is performed inside in a warehouse environment and outside in containment areas on a year-round basis. Subject to cuts, bruises, abrasions, and scrapes in moving or handling materials and equipment and to hazards involved in working in proximity to moving equipment such as fork lifts, trucks, cranes, and conveyor lines. For materials handling duties, employee may be subject to hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted areas or exposed to dust, dirt, grease, solvents, and high noise areas. May be required to wear protective clothing such as hard hats, steel-toed shoes, rubber gloves, masks, and rubber aprons. When handling hazardous materials, protective equipment is provided. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
