This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Duties

The following duties are required of the Chief, Dental Service position; they include, but are not limited to: Ensures that program services meet accreditation requirements and are compliant with regulatory and accountability standards such as those set forth by the Joint Commission, GARF, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), and VA Central Office (VACO) and other accrediting bodies as deemed appropriate. Responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and evaluation of clinical services consistent with evidence-based best practices. Oversees the development of program activities, services, record-keeping, schedules, policies, evaluation procedures, marketing brochures, educational resources, etc. Convenes service staff meetings and other meetings to promote effective functioning of the service area. Ensures implementation of established communication practices to including huddling, and leadership rounding. Tracks and monitors service productivity to include consult closure and completion of timely view alerts as required by policy. Works closely with executive leadership, managerial and clinical leaders in formulating local policies, resource planning for manpower, equipment, and space. Works with Human Resources to meet labor management partnership obligations in planning policy changes that impacts work conditions. Collaborates with medical center management to meet mutual long and short-range goals. Supports provision of service orientation and continuing education for all persons in the service. Supports a program of staff development that upgrades knowledge and skills of the service personnel and prepares future leaders for the service. Works with supervisors/section leads to oversee work schedules and assignments, tours of duty, and to make certain that station time and attendance policies are followed in effort to accomplish all necessary work, based on available resources, local Health Care System requirements, labor agreements, VA, and Federal personnel regulations. Defines expectations for work completion, while providing flexibility that reflects the complex nature of the problems of the Veteran population served. Addresses coverage issues, manages day to day operations, liaises with administrative staff both internal and external to ensure full clinical operations. Prioritizes and advocates for clinic space, equipment and technology resource allocation that best meets the needs of the service and facility. Provides decision-making about budgeting and resources to support clinical services and admission criteria, program operations, and reporting requirements. Links clinical improvements to operation efficiency for the service. Identifies and monitors ongoing training needs of staff and makes provisions for staff development and education. Assures that service education maintains goals compatible with the overall service plans and objectives that encourage staff to request and attend program development offerings. Recommends criteria for clinical privileges that are relevant to the care provided in the service and make recommendation of clinical privileges for staff members as appropriate and in alignment with service goals and mission. Responsible for ensuring independent licensed providers are properly credentialed and privileged and that FPPEs/OPPEs are conducted in accordance with Medical Center Bylaws and VHA/Joint Com mission guidelines. Provides continuing surveillance of professional performance of all individuals in the service who have delineated clinical privileges. Responsible for ensuring that a sufficient number of qualified and competent personnel are available to adequately render patient care, treatment, and services in align with service demands. Engages in the provision of advice, counsel, instruction, and mentoring to employees regarding work and administrative matters. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Dentist Basic Requirements A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Preferred Experience: Leadership and supervisory experience with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Experience in project and change management, innovation, and project improvement/lean projects is highly desired. References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-3 Dentist Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires mostly periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients/residents who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on stakeholder needs.
