Duties

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 29, 2024 or until positions are filled, closed or canceled. The following duties are required of the General Dentist position; they include, but are not limited to: - Comprehensive dental examination, consultation, diagnosis, and treatment planning including the use of radiographs, photographs, diagnostic tests, impressions, jaw relation records and diagnostic casts. - Preliminary diagnosis, initial treatment, or stabilization of oral manifestations of systemic disease. - Preventive dentistry services. - Restorative dentistry procedures: amalgam and resin based composite restorations, inlays, onlays, veneers, pin or post retained restorations, post and core procedures and crowns. - Endodontic procedures: uncomplicated, nonsurgical root canal therapy for permanent teeth, pulp caps, pulpotomy, pulpectomy, apexification and apexogenesis. - Periodontic procedures: scaling and root planning, full mouth debridement, gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, gingival curettage, crown lengthening, localized delivery of chemotherapeutic agents, periodontal maintenance procedures. - Fixed Prosthodontic procedures. - Removable Prosthodontic procedures: Complete and partial dentures. - Oral Surgery procedures: within scope of granted privileges. - Evaluation and non-surgical management of Temporomandibular - Dysfunction including fabrication of occlusal guards. - Bleaching procedures. - Local anesthesia. - Management of pain. - Minor Orthodontics. - Prescriptions. - Consultation requests and responses. - Dental management of medically compromised patients. - Responsible for providing the patient with risks, benefits and alternative treatments and securing the informed consent of the patient/family needed before conducting invasive procedures. - Incumbent are expected to be BLS certified. - Participates in various hospital committees, department and hospital in-service programs and acquire CME's as required. - Work effectively with patients, families, co-workers, and other health care professionals treating them with respect and dignity. - Complies with information security policy and procedures. - Consults requesting Community Care Dental services are performed in a timely manner and that the results are made readily available to the referring practitioners - Other duties as assigned. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Dentist Basic Requirements: A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Preferred Experience: Experience with crown and bridge work, simple extractions, full and partial dentures References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-3 Dentist Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires mostly periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients/residents who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on stakeholder needs.

NOTE: The Under Secretary for Health or designee in Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a graduate of a school of dentistry not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research or academic position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area. The Under Secretary for Health or designee may also approve the appointment of a graduate of a school of dentistry not covered above as a resident under 38 U.S.C. 7406.
