About the Position: Serves as a member of a firefighting team within the Directorate of Emergency Services located on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA. Duties

Receives on-the-job and classroom training in the fundamental principles of firefighting and fire prevention. Assists higher grade firefighters in fighting fires. Performs maintenance tasks, such as painting fire hydrants, checking hoses, assisting with maintenance on firefighting apparatus, equipment, and facilities,

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime. This position performs, as required, mutual aid support to local fire departments.
  • This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
  • This position requires the incumbent to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
  • This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • An individual not currently occupying a GS-0081 primary/rigorous position is required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical prior to being placed into this position.
  • Within the first year of occupying the position, the incumbent must obtain and then continue to maintain the following DoD Firefighter Certification levels: Firefighter I.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Experience and/or Education Requirements: A. Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience in work experience or military service that demonstrated the ability to follow directions and to read, understand, and retain a variety of instructions, regulations, and procedures and that otherwise demonstrates the ability to perform or learn to perform the duties of the position. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-02). B. Education: One year of education above the high school level related to fire protection and/or prevention OR six months of appropriate firefighter training. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) C. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education/training and experience that may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 6. Then divide your semester hours of education by 30 and/or months of firefighter training by 6. Add the two percentages. (NOTE: You MUST attach a copy of your transcripts.)
