This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, Coast Guard Academy, Cadet Division, Sail and Seamanship Branch, New London, CT.

Duties

You will serve along with other support personnel and provide maintenance services on a variety of sailing and power driven vessels ranging from 14 to 65 feet.   Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.  Typical work assignments include:- Maintaining fiberglass hulls and decks on a variety of sailboats and motorboats to include buffing, sanding, polishing, waxing and painting.- Repairing damage to fiberglass hulls and decks.- Preparing spars and rigging for use, tune and adjust rigs for racing.- Maintaining and repairing running and standing rigging to include lines, blocks and hardware.- Maintaining and repairing deck hardware including winches, cleats, stoppers, blocks, tracks and cars.- Installing equipment on boats. 

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Applicant is required to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service

Qualifications

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired.- Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT ELEMENT)- Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)- Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)- Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment.- Knowledge of Equipment Assembly and Installation- Knowledge of Materials- Use of Measuring Instruments National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
