You will serve as a CHEMIST in the Quality Assurance Office, Laboratory Division of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will plan, coordinate, direct, schedule and implement tests and conduct projects. You will plan and conduct chemical and instrumental studies of a very complex and difficult nature in support of regulatory requirements. You will provide chemistry-oriented technical advice to and works in close coordination with other chemists. You will train other chemists and technicians to perform material testing.

  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as protective clothing such as fume hoods, laboratory coats, safety glasses, face shields gloves, dust respirators and anti-contamination clothing.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience planning and conducting chemical and instrumental studies on complex and difficult nature supporting regulatory requirements and protocol. Experience writing procedures implementing test methods with local modifications to accommodate specific types of test instrumentation. Experience in conducting technical reviews and studies of established and/or proposed analytical methods outlining procedures and conducting investigations. Experience developing and applying new techniques to analyze materials to determine validity and scientific significance. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
