This Pipefitter position is located in the Maintenance and Operations section of the Facilities Management Service Line, Tomah, Wisconsin VA Medical Center and installs, modifies and repairs new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment.

Duties

Duties include: Works on preventive maintenance, repair and installation of all types of plumbing, steam heating fixtures and their allied equipment. Has knowledge and ability to maintain, repair, and install traps (float, thermostatic; inverted bucket, pulse, bimetallic, and other types); proper application in steam heating system is critical; control valves (pneumatic, thermal, bimetallic, and other types); pressure reducing regulators and pilot regulators; pressure equalizing, pneumatic, and thermal expansion sensors. Must know design application for different type systems or contact consultant type person in this field (supervisor). Such systems include condensate return pumps (positive displacement), centrifugal type vertical or horizontal, related couplers, mounts, bearings, seals, and impellers. Works on wall recessed radiators, unit heater (vertical and horizontal), convector, *forced draft heater, and all. related type thermostatic controls, pneumatic controlled heat exchangers (steam/heating water) for domestic dishwashers, and hydronic heating. Also works on related appurtenance, vacuum release, relief valves, (critical) proper application to heating system or domestic, expansion joints, types packing and lubrication. Hydronic heating system: pump circulating, centrifugal, horizontal, and vertical related couplers, etc. Trouble shoots heating systems. Shall know the theory and principles: Why and how the heat is generated: Where location is being treated: What each component of the heating system does and how to repair it.Work includes installation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of the visible water, air, gas, and sewer lines. Maintain and repair laundry, dietetic, and other equipment such as deep well pumps, water heaters, bathtubs, lavatories, sinks, therapeutic bath, circulating pumps, etc. To accomplish. work must be able to do arc and acetylene welding and use other tools common to the trade. Maintains, repairs, tests, and installs all outside plumbing which includes sanitary sewer, water, gas, fire main, and underground sprinkler systems. Performs other related duties as assigned. Your resume should describe your ability to perform the duties of a Pipefitter which includes but is not limited to: Experience installing, maintaining, repairing, and inspecting of visible water, air, gas, and sewer lines; maintaining and repairing laundry, dietetic, and other equipment such as deep well pumps, water heaters, bathtubs, lavatories, sinks, therapeutic bath, circulation pumps, etc.; ability to install, inspect and repair hydronic heating systems including pump circulating, centrifugal, horizontal, and vertical related couplers, etc., convectors force draft, unit heaters-unit ventilator baseboard radiation, zone valves, voltage thermostat, and control valve; knowledge of how various high-pressured piping systems and equipment are installed and operate; ability to plan and lay out installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment; ability to apply federal, state and local codes and regulations applicable to pipefitting trade standards and be able to interpret and apply such to the performance of daily tasks; ability to read and interpret technical directives, blueprints, mechanical drawings, control diagrams, written manuals, schematics and specifications and to apply such information; ability to use shop mathematics to lay out angles, arcs, and circles; skilled in accepted trade methods and technique, and in the use of tools and equipment such as measuring tapes, dividers, chalk lines, plumb bobs, templates, star drills, grinders, flanges, power pipe threaders and cutters, and pipe wrenches; and consistently follow safe work practices and procedures, particularly while lifting, carrying tools, maintaining equipment, etc. How You Will Be Evaluated:You will be rated on the following job elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position. Physical Requirements: The incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. The work requires a high degree of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently handles, lifts, carries, and sets-up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent may lift and carry items that weigh greater than 50 pounds. Heavy exertion may be required during installation of steam piping and plumbing. All precautions shall be taken against personal injury. Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. The incumbent may be required to work in underground tunnels, attics, basements, closets, boiler plant, laundry, and other areas. Work on some occasions is under extremely high temperatures and requires the use of heavy tools and equipment in close quarters. Also works in ditches when repairing or laying new pipe. Must wear proper safety attire and use air quality test equipment. The nature of the work exposes the incumbent to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns and infections.
