The primary purpose of this position is to perform carpentry, plumbing, and painting worker duties in the installation, modification, and repair of buildings, structures, and other construction projects.

Duties

- Performs minor construction and repair on existing structures involving standard measurements, specifications, instructions, and basic shop mathematics. - Following specific information, locates and makes repairs to plumbing that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems, such as dirty traps, sections of broken tile or pipe, and leaky drains using existing routes, openings, hangers, and levels. - Prepares surfaces, mixes and prepares coating material, and applies coating materials. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. - Uses and maintains tools and equipment.

  • scaffolding, platforms, and rooftops. Frequently lifts and carries material and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds, unassisted, and occasionally lifts or moves heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers.
  • Painting work may be at extreme heights (such as water towers or tall buildings) that require the employee to be strapped into swing stages.
  • This position has been designated by the air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reductions Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.
  • Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4700 General Maintenance and Operations Work Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of a MAINTENANCE WORKER without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of carpentry methods and techniques, basic shop mathematics, and material strength applications to construct, install, repair, or modify wood structures. 2. Knowledge of standard plumbing equipment assembly, installation, and repair, to include flow and drainage. 3. Knowledge of standard surface preparation and coating methods and techniques; and paints and thinning compounds. 4. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures; and regulations, procedures, and policies related to records maintenance and documentation. 5. Skill in operating and maintaining hand and power tools and equipment; removing, repairing, installing, and replacing parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems without more than normal supervision; working from sketches, work orders, and basic blueprints; and measuring, constructing, and installing materials. and interpret instructions; plan and layout work according to instructions; and learn mixing, matching, and toning techniques. Physical Effort: Uses hand and power tools and equipment that may require standing and holding tools in uncomfortable positions for extended periods. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, climbing, and stooping. On site work requires strenuous physical exertion when handling heavy and bulky materials. Work typically requires bending, stooping, crawling, and climbing on ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and rooftops. Frequently lifts and carries material and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds, unassisted, and occasionally lifts or moves heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Painting work may be at extreme heights (such as water towers or tall buildings) that require the employee to be strapped into swing stages. Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy, with spray and fumes usually present. May work in confined areas, such as crawl spaces and attics. In shops, is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue, fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment including hazardous of working on and around scaffolds and ladders. The employee is sometimes required to make repairs and installations outside in all types of weather. The employee is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, contusions, burns, and infections. May occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Protective equipment and clothing, such as safety shoes, earplugs, safety glasses or sunglasses, gloves, rain gear, hard hats, coveralls, respirators, and other protective gear are required, which are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
