About the Position: The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) aims to conduct biomedical research that is responsive to Department of Defense and US Army requirements and delivers lifesaving products including knowledge, technology and medical material that sustain the combat effectiveness of the Warfighter.

Duties

Advises management on the Safety and Occupational Health Program. Plan, direct, manage, assign and assist in safety and Occupational Health Program management. Monitor, evaluates and make recommendations on Safety and Occupational Health Programs. Ensure policies are incorporated into the Safety and Occupational Health Program. Implement Safety and Occupational Health Practices.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain eligibility for a Secret security clearance.
• Two year probationary period may be required.

The DJ-03 pay band is equivalent to the GS-11 Step 01 to GS-12 to Step 10 level. In keeping with the Demonstration pay fixing policies, employees earning a salary that falls within the pay band equivalent, may not receive an immediate pay increase (promotion) if appointed to this position. Future pay increases within the pay band will be accomplished through the pay for performance management system.In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Management and control of hazardous materials, (2) Enforcing safety-related policies and procedures, and (3) Supporting a safety and occupational health program. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (DJ-02/GS-09). OR Degree: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Combination of Education and experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
