The Public Integrity Section is a litigating Section of the Criminal Division, Department of Justice, with responsibility for the investigation and prosecution of public corruption and election offenses nationwide. The Section oversees the federal effort to combat corruption through the prosecution of elected and appointed public officials at all levels of government. Section attorneys investigate and prosecute cases against federal, state, and local officials throughout the United States.
Duties
The incumbent serves as a Supervisory Trial Attorney (Deputy Chief), responsible for independently investigating, prosecuting, and trying public corruption matters, and supervising the work of Trial Attorneys who conduct such investigations and prosecutions nationwide.
As a Supervisory Trial Attorney (Deputy Chief), you will:
Participate in and direct the Section's efforts to investigate and prosecute public corruption offenses, including recusal cases, agency referrals, shared cases with United States Attorney's Offices, corruption cases affecting national security, and election crimes and campaign financing offenses.
Supervise Trial Attorneys, who conduct public corruption investigations and prosecutions, and also personally conduct investigations, handle matters before the grand jury, and conduct public corruption trials.
Maintain a strong knowledge of criminal court procedure; interact with law enforcement officials in receiving and discussing evidence; develop investigative plans, draft grand jury subpoenas; conduct witness interviews; draft, review and edit briefs; plan and conduct arguments before the court; negotiate with opposing counsel, and interact with the assigned judge, and other officers of the court.
Make charging decisions and propose dispositions with regard to Section cases.
Participate in Section's efforts to provide sound and effective legal advice and training for Assistant United States Attorneys, law enforcement agents, international delegations, and foreign law enforcement agencies regarding public corruption and election crime matters.
Evaluate reports of investigation and memoranda from law enforcement agencies to determine whether litigation is warranted.
Advise and instruct U.S. Attorneys on complicated questions of law and Departmental policy.

Requirements

- This position has supervisory/managerial responsibilities. A one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period is required upon selection. This may be waived if you have successfully completed the supervisory/managerial probationary period.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications: Interested applicants must possess a J.D., or equivalent, degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of any State, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and be an active member of the bar in good standing. To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, applicants must have at least four (4) years post J.D. legal experience, one of which was specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-14 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: independently performing legal analysis; composing pleadings, briefs and other court documents involving unique and/or difficult legal issues in civil or criminal litigation; conducting highly complex civil or criminal litigation; and leading paralegals and support staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
Your qualifications will be further evaluated based upon the following competencies and experiences:
Knowledge of public corruption cases;
Civil or criminal litigation experience;
Experience in supporting, litigating, and supervising litigation in federal or state courts;
Trial experience in U.S. District Court or State Court; and
Experience supporting and leading complex criminal investigations and prosecution of public corruption offenses.
Education
A J.D., or equivalent, degree.
