This position serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic within the Facilities Management at the VA Medical Center in Bronx, NY. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, performing preventative maintenance and repairing all HVAC&R (heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration) equipment and controls.

Duties

This is an open continuous announcement. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies become available. Applications will remain on file until June 10, 2024.Your duties can include but are not limited to the following: Repairing, troubleshooting, maintaining and installing air conditioning equipment in the hospital and ancillary buildings; Installing, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining refrigerators, freezers and ice machines, including those utilized for patient food and drugs, laboratory specimens and blood products; Operating and repairing all aspects of the environmental control system to include adding and removing points in the system, building graphics, modifying and troubleshooting programing, repairing and replacing sensors, actuators and other control devices, and repairing and replacing LAN devices such as terminal equipment controllers; and Troubleshooting, diagnosing and making repairs to a large variety of equipment and systems that provide a variety of air-conditioning functions, such as heating, cooling, humidification, dehumidification and air cleaning, filtering and circulating. Work Schedule: Various Shift Schedules Position Description Title/PD#: Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic/PD55634-A and PD55634A Physical Requirements: Frequently carrying and setting up parts and equipment that weighs in excess of seventy-five (75) pounds. Hoists, holders and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers and chillers. Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places; therefore, frequently stretching, bending and kneeling for long periods of time are required. In some areas, crawling is required to reach a piece of equipment or pump. All safety harnesses and equipment, including PPE must be worn when working in such areas where PPE is needed to protect the safety of the individual. Working Conditions: Usually works inside but is occasionally required to work outside on top of tall buildings during periods of inclement weather, in drafty attic spaces and in cramped areas with low overheads. Uncomfortable facemasks and protective clothing may be occasionally worn when there is a possibility of exposure to hazards, such as toxic refrigerants when making emergency repairs. Employee is subject to cuts, bums, electrical shocks and respiratory ailments. Exposure to concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin and internal organs.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
