This purpose of this position is to serve as a Maintenance Mechanic in the Facilities Management Service at the Oklahoma City VA Health Care System.
Duties
Major duties of this position include but are not limited to...
Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, and drawings; performs material takeoffs for ordering various sizes of projects
Installs door hardware such as closures, slides and glides, hinges, lock sets, kick plates, push and pulls etc.
Installs lathing channel, metal lath, corner and floor boards and masonry repairs and installation
Determines the layout, measurements, materials, and tools required to construct concrete structure at a journeyman level
Operates heavy equipment
Assembles, constructs, reconstructs, and repairs metal furniture, shelving and other items pertaining to metal work as well as welding on carbon steel pipes and fabrication of various items
Repairs and replaces all parts of bedside stands, cabinets, and hospital equipment of various kinds
Installs and repairs dry wall and uses various spray machines; knowledgeable of safety hazards of working off ladders and scaffolds
Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending and mixing in various additives; applies coating material with any of the accepted trade devices, including those designed to give special effects (i.e. brushes rollers, spray guns, texture brushes, and dry walling)
Erects smoke and firewalls to NFPA specifications and constructs dust barriers to meet OSHA regulations
Conducts interior and exterior painting; knowledgeable on the mix and matching of colors as well as the specific types of paint to use specific applications (i.e. enamel for metal or latex for wood)

Physical Requirements: Work requires strenuous exertion in building; requires standing for long periods of time, working in heated or cold areas; must work on ladders, scaffolds, and roofs while sitting, kneeling, standing or stooping in awkward positions; in some cases, must go in areas such as boiler/mechanical rooms, pipe chases, roofs, attics, basements, etc.; frequent handles objects weighing 10 to 90 lbs. Project demands may require work at other than normal administrative hours.
Working Conditions: Some work is performed in the shop areas. Incumbent is required to work in close, tight areas at times. Incumbent is exposed to hazards of working from heights, falling materials, steam and hot water lines, sometimes exposed to electrical shocks. Incumbent is subject to working out in all kinds of weather conditions and temperatures and in confined dusty and dirty areas. Work is usually done in well lighted, heated and ventilated areas. Outdoor work is normally done in good weather. Incumbent may occasionally work in dirty, dusty, hot or cold environments such as crawl spaces and attics. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, broken bones, and serious burns caused by electrical shock, high voltage, and hot components while working around equipment. At times, works around extremely high noise and vibration sources. Work in ward areas around sick patients. Incumbent may be called upon to work overtime and call-back in case of emergencies.
