This position is located at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, located in Phoenix, Arizona. Incumbent assumes responsibilities for the diagnosis, prevention, therapy, maintenance, and rehabilitation of adult patients. As Deputy Chief of Internal Medicine Hospitalist, the incumbent supervises and administers the Department of Internal Medicine Hospitalist in the absence of the Chief. The incumbent performs specific diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Duties

Interviews and examines patients, reviews past medical history, and requests and/or performs diagnostic tests and examinations deemed necessary to obtain all possible information related to each case. Serves as Consultant to the Field Hospitals in providing professional expertise in his/her specialty area. Provides clinical oversight to other members of the department and contractors. Performs procedures when indicated, such as insertion of central venous catheters, thoracenteses, paracenteses, lumbar punctures,skin biopsies, simple incision and drainage of abscesses, and others, when properly privileged. Teaches clinical procedures if indicated and properly privileged. In the absence of the Chief, serves as Acting Chief, Department of Internal Medicine. In the absence of the Chief, the Physician serves asDeputy Director and directs activities of the Department of Internal Medicine in accordance with objectives of the Indian Health Service. In the absence of the Chief, supervises the Internal Medicine Department staff normally supervised by the Chief.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):All Physicians must meet all three of the following basic requirements: 1. Degree - Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. 2. Licensure: Active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the U.S. Applications will be accepted from physicians who are not currently licensed; however, if selected for a Federal appointment they must obtain a license before entering on duty. The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service. 3. Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least one (1) year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a one (1) year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below. An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association, (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-0602-15: Completion of at least five (5) years of approved residency or other accredited training. OR Possess a combination of approved residency or other accredited training and progressive experience equivalent in breadth and intensity for this position. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR - Board Certification: In addition to the minimum requirements, the following certification is determined to be essential to perform the duties and responsibilities of a particular position. Applicants who do not meet a selective placement factor are ineligible for further consideration. (You must provide evidence with your application of meeting this requirement) Board Certification is required through the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
