This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Durham Medical Center, in the Operations Section of Engineering Service.
Duties
Major duties include but are not limited to:
Responsible for the operations and on-the-the job training for operating and maintaining equipment in both Boiler and Chiller Plants and all ancillary environmental equipment throughout the hospital and all associated lease properties.
Supervise the operation of all supporting and component equipment of air conditioning systems including; cooling towers, fans, and pumps.
Monitoring and checking all air handling units and notifying appropriate personnel when problems occur.
Establish deadlines and priorities of work to maintain the plant and equipment in good working order.
Conduct training sessions with the operator on duty to ensure that all operators are qualified and familiar with the requirements of their duties and responsibilities.
Maintenance of the boilers, combustion controls and recorders to assure that boiler equipment is producing at peak efficiency at all times.
Responsible for all elevators and dumbwaiters for the Medical Center
Responsible for checking monthly electric, water and fuel bills for certification by the Chief Engineering Service with the Energy Manager, for the training of new employees under his/her supervision.
Selects worker and assigns task to be performed, explaining work requirements, methods and procedures.
Responsible for leave approval, developing performance standards, writing and updating positions descriptions, rating and evaluating employees, on-the-job training.
Perform other job related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: 7:30 a.m. -4:00 p.m.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Lifts and carries heavy equipment needed in the maintenance and repair work of plant equipment. Works in cramped positions at times and must be continuously alert to the many hazardous conditions.
