This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veterans Integrated Service Network 6 (VISN 6), Engineering Service, Operations section at the Durham VA Health Care System (DVAHCS), in Durham, North Carolina. The incumbent works as a Shift Plant Operator with shift responsibility for operation, maintenance and repair of the Air Conditioning Plant and the Boiler Plant that includes an Energy Management control System.
Duties
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Performs normal repetitive functions of operations, observations, inspections, tests, repairs and preventive maintenance on the Air Conditioning Plant and the Boiler Plant as per standing shift orders and daily operation orders.
Responsible for starting or stopping of selected motor driven equipment, controlling key temperatures, pressures, humidity and other mechanical conditions, utilizing the computerized control reheat system.
Operates, monitors, and maintains three (3) supplementary reciprocating electric driver chiller units. The incumbent operates three (3) 17,000 pounds per ABCO fire tube high-pressure steam boilers gas and oil-fired.
Observes, inspects, performs necessary test, measures key temperatures, pressures, humidity, and resets control points as conditions require.
Makes scheduled preventive maintenance inspections, and repairs on all equipment and systems. Monitors alarm enunciator panel.
Controls and operates, thru the Control Center functional components of each of the following: mechanical exhaust systems, auxiliary air conditioning systems for standby/supplemental cooling, heated and chilled water circulating systems. This is accomplished through associated temperature and humidity controls.
Monitors and controls, through the Utility Plant Control Room, generator indicator panel, and alarm enunciator panel exhaust systems, supply air, room temperatures, and HVAC conditions to ensure conditions are within normal parameters. Monitors various building alarm systems for electric emergency power generators, fire alarm system, oxygen system, vacuum system, nitrous oxide system, medical compressed air system, sump pumps, and pneumatic tube system.
Makes chemical test of water systems for the Boiler Plant and Air Conditioning Plant. Makes adjustments to water by adding chemicals or blow down to maintain proper and effective water treatment.
Work Schedule: Full-time; rotating shifts days, evening, nights & weekends

Physical Requirements: Lifts and carries heavy equipment needed in the maintenance and repair work of plant equipment. Works in cramped positions at times and must be continuously alert to the many hazardous conditions.
