Duties

Perform quality assurance reviews of medical data to ensure diagnoses and procedures are documented according to the ICD-10-CM coding guidelines, medical/legal requirements, Joint Commission standards, Army regulations and DOD specific requirements. Apply International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes, interpret Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) and apply Present On Admission (POA) and follow coding rules. Review the quality and completeness of clinical documentation. Inpatient Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) focuses on the concurrent review of patient records with an emphasis on improving documentation while the patient is still in-house. Review documentation and facilitate modifications to the health record to ensure accurate severity of illness, risk of mortality, complexity of care, and utilization of resources. Identify opportunities for documentation improvement by ensuring that diagnoses and procedures are documented to the highest level of specificity, accurately address all acute and chronic conditions, and reflect the true health status of patients. Analyze and interpret documentation and formulate physician queries to improve the quality, completeness and accuracy of the inpatient medical record. Identify areas of documentation improvement to improve reimbursement and to support the complexity and specificity required by International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10) coding.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work weekends and/or holidays.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the federal service which includes coding medical record information; conducting quality assurance by reviewing medical records to ensure diagnoses and procedures are properly documented or coded per agency regulatory requirements; and assisting with the training on proper documentation and coding procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as, Medical Records Administration, Healthcare Administration and Health Information Management. Or Combination of Experience and Education: have the specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and have at least one year of graduate education as described in B, but less than the required two years. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
