This position is located at South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS): North West Health Care Center (NWHCC). The Health Technician (Radiology) function as a member of the Imaging Service care team and assist higher graded radiology staff and other members of the care team in the care of patients/residents receiving outpatient or inpatient imaging care. The primary duty is to provide technical assistance in the Imaging Department for inpatients and outpatients under close supervision.
Duties
The Health Technician will ensure a smooth transition between acquiring lab results for Imaging Exams and patient flow for imaging procedures requiring lab work. T
Will assist with VA Directive 1105.05 requiring 2 level 2 MRI personnel be present with all MRI Imaging Exams.
The Health Technician will assist the completion of patient exam questionnaires to ensure patient safety is adhered.
The Health Technician will be proficient with CPRS and other patient tracking programs utilized in the Imaging Service.
Ensures the technical work assignments of the unit or team are carried out.
The Health Technician works with the Imaging Supervisors in the assignment of functions to team members to meet time frames ensuring the CT and MR patients are seen in a timely manner and exam times are adhered.
The Health Technician distributes and balances workload and tasks among operating established workload and/or job specialization.
Monitors the status and progress of work and makes day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities.
The Health Technician functions as a member of the radiology/MRI care team and assists patients as they prepare for and undergo MRI or radiologic imaging exams.
The Radiology Health Technician must be able to perform multiple tasks according to the needs of the radiology department.
The Health Technician may be utilized in the Ultrasound Modality as a chaperone for invasive procedures.
The Health Technician maintains knowledge and answers questions of other employee's procedures, policies, and directives.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/28/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR): The Health Technician 0640 occupational series requires specific education or experience to be met in order to be appointed into a position of this series. This IOR is set by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and the following must be met:
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
In addition to meeting the IOR above, applicants must also meet the minimum qualifications as described below:
GS-6 Minimum Qualifications:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Health Technician or experience in another medical field (Certified Nurse Assistant, Health Technician, hospital corpsman, etc.) performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments. Skilled in performing/charting vital signs, wound care, surgical staple removal, Urodynamic equipment, insertion, proper maintenance; Knowledgeable of multiple types of catheters and problem solving Foley catheter malfunction; Knowledge and guide others in patient safety related to patient identification, transportation safety, safe/efficient handling of specimens, culture/cytology, hand off communication, and time out procedures; Familiar with handling, cleaning, high level disinfection, and maintaining endoscopic equipment, including multiple catheters; Knowledgeable of aseptic and sterile techniques; Knowledgeable on common medications required for procedures to include, safe retrieval, storing, securement, preparation, and administration. Ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as monitoring, MRI safety screening, venipuncture, specimen collection, etc.

Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical demands requiring the employee to be versatile in the many functions performed. These include sedentary work performed at a desk with intermittent standing, walking, bending, and lifting of lightweight records and supplies (rarely exceeding 25 pounds.). The demands may be unpredictable requiring the incumbent to adjust accordingly. May be required to assist in transporting and transferring patients from wheelchair or stretcher to the examination environment. Will be responsible for moving equipment as necessary. Sufficient hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to assemble and clean endoscopic instruments is required. The ability to bend, stoop, stretch, lift, and position patients is frequently necessary.
