This position is located within the Northern Arizona VA Healthcare System under the Pharmacy Service Line. This position may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments and must be available to work rotating shifts.

The incumbent independently performs a variety of expanded complex technical duties and responsibilities of a Pharmacy Technician in the pharmacy, which require application of an extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy practice. Duties of the pharmacy technician include but are not limited to: Program, operate, clean, and maintain prepack medication packaging equipment. Fills prescriptions for medications for a final check by a pharmacist. The filling process includes utilization of pre-packaged drugs, automated electronic counting equipment, and manufacturer bulk packaging. Process new prescriptions, refill requests, partial prescription requests, and label printing or reprinting utilizing computerized software programs. Answers telephone calls from patients, physicians, and other health care professionals. Interacts with patients at the time medications are dispensed to patient, verifying patient identity and obtaining patient signature as needed for controlled substances. Organizes, files, and maintains dispensing documents, original prescriptions, and other required documentation in accordance with federal regulations and state laws. Performs mandatory monthly inspection of assigned areas, ensuring proper stock rotation, and ensuring expiration date and/or lot number validity. Provide assistance to the pharmacist by filling disposable medical supply prescriptions. Prepares and fills requests for controlled substances, including preparing mail prescriptions which are controlled substances. Obtains computerized reports to perform inventory, usage logs, receiving invoices for controlled substances. Ensures required documentation of all transactions is completed. Replenishes automated dispensing system cassettes. Enters lot and expiration date information. Correctly interprets physician orders, selects and measures appropriate ingredients, mixes ingredients in a safe and effective manner, inspects the final product for accuracy, stability, solutes and labels the product. Incumbent maintains records of the manufacturing process and supplies the product for delivery. Receives supplies into stock, ensuring that quantity received matches invoice stated quantity. Performs other duties as assigned and deemed essential to the efficient operation of the Pharmacy Service. Work Schedule: Tours vary depending on the needs of the service to include rotating days, nights, weekends and holidays. Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Not Authorized. Permanent Change of Station (Relocation Assistance): Not Authorized. Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Telework: Not Available. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.) English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). Education or Experience: None required. For all grade levels and positions that accept both education and experience to qualify, equivalent combinations of qualifying education and experience that total at least 100% are qualifying. The combined percentage is determined by adding total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level to the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Certification. For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates. Pharmacy Technician, GS-06 Experience: In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, you are required to possess at least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-05) which demonstrates the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled. KSAs described at the next lower grade level include: knowledge of basic pharmacy operations, knowledge of pharmaceuticals to perform duties in pharmacy functional areas, knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature (including generic, chemical and proprietary names of drug), ability to fill prescriptions, and ability to use pharmacy information systems or basic pharmacy dispensing equipment with oversight. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Knowledge of Federal and state laws related to pharmacy practice. Knowledge of preparation, storage and distribution of medication products including those requiring special handling and documentation. Ability to use pharmacy information systems or operate pharmacy dispensing equipment. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures. Ability to communicate with patients and staff and direct questions to appropriate personnel. References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G28 Pharmacy Technician Qualification Standard. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06. Physical Requirements: This work requires regular and recurring physical exertion involving standing for prolonged periods of time, walking, bending, stooping, stretching, lifting, handling items not to exceed 40 pounds, and irregular work shifts. Incumbent must be able to walk an average of 3 to 5 miles per day. Work Environment: This work is performed in the Inpatient and Outpatient Pharmacy, however, some activities take place in patient care areas in the hospital complex where there is a potential for exposure to communicable diseases. Such areas are adequately heated and ventilated, and normal safety precautions are required.
