Duties
Clinical Instructor: The incumbent performs technical work in support of diagnostic radiology and is responsible for the oversight of an affiliated DRT educational program. Duties may include assigning daily workplans, coordinating evaluations, conducting imaging labs, assessing performance and assigning grades. The instructor has knowledge of the affiliation requirements and oversees the VA standards to ensure compliance.
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Performs the full spectrum of radiographic and fluoroscopic examinations. Receives patients, explains method of procedure and obtains signed consents for examinations with contrast medias. The incumbent is responsible for proper positioning of patients. Prior to exposure selects and sets technical factors. Sets up and adjusts accessory equipment required and makes exposures necessary for the requested procedures. In the case of injected media, a patient consent form must be obtained, when indicated. The radiographer must know the effects of contrast materials and adverse reactions. Improper use or administration of the contrast materials run the risk of patient mortality, therefore, it is essential that a thorough understanding of usage be possessed by those who prepare it. Must be continuously on the alert to the patient's condition and other disorders. Adverse reactions on the part of the patient require immediate attention so that harm does not come to the patient or equipment.
B. After a diagnosis of the student education need is made, the incumbent identifies internal and external resources and established priorities for education program based on balance of needs and resources. Review relevant examples of technically "poor" radiographic examinations with student technologists.
C. Provides on the spot training to radiology students and full-time staff. Prepares reports to affiliations regarding student progress and areas of concern.
D. Develops and coordinate an orientation program for new radiology technicians and/or technologists. Provide assistance to both technologists and students in developing and preparing professional displays and/or research papers for competition and/or publications.
E. Keeps abreast of the technological advances in the field of radiology and incorporate these into the in-service educational programs. Prepare and conduct one (1) departmental in-service educational program per quarter.
F. Performs Quality Control procedures, which may include (but not exclusively) the following:
Reject/repeat film analysis
Image plate and cassette cleaning regiment
Grid alignment and artifacts
Automatic exposure control density and field sensitivity
Reproducibility and accuracy of timer and KVP stations
Lead apron & glove radiation verification
G. Performs radiographic exams of the head, spine, chest, abdomen (including exams of GI tract, gallbladder, urinary system and fistula) and extremities (including arthrography). These are achieved by using diagnostic x-ray equipment such as fluoroscopic units and general diagnostic units.
H. Performs radiographic exams at the bedside and in the operating rooms providing diagnostic x-rays to the surgeons and professional staff on patients that are unable to be x-rayed in the Radiology Service due to incapacity or surgical procedures. The use of four portable x-ray units and a mobile intensifier unit that is located in Surgery achieve these exams.
I. Prepares contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist, for the purpose of performing exams requiring injectable solutions such as IVP, cystogram, cholangiograms, fistulagrams and arthrography and for the purpose of performing oral and rectal exams of the GI tract. These procedures may require the use of needles, syringes, contrast media, enema bags and drinking cups.
J. Responsible to the radiologists and supervisor for the quality and quantity of radiographic exams performed in order to assure a high level of acceptability of radiographs which minimize patient dosage and reduce costs.
K. Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self. This is achieved by the use of lead aprons, lead gloves, lead shields, lead-lined walls and collimation. Film badges are worn by the technologists to assure compliance to radiation regulations. The incumbent must be aware of and practice the safety policies/procedures of the medical center and participate in quality assurance activities, as directed.
L. Properly identifies patient images using identifiers and L & R markers. This is essential so that mistaken identity of image to patients does not occur. The radiographer must be certain that the patient ID band and the request are identical.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 0800-1630

Telework: No
Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
