You will serve as a Health Technician in the Emergency Room for Nursing Services, at VA Puget Sound Healthcare System, Seattle, Washington. Ideal candidate for the Emergency Department Health Technician you should have 1-2 years Emergency Department work experience or military Medic or Corpsman experience or 6 months Phlebotomy experience. RECRUITMENT / RELOCATION INCENTIVES ARE AUTHORIZED up to $7500 for highly qualified candidates.

Duties

Ideal candidate for the Emergency Department Health Technician you should have 1-2 years Emergency Department work experience or military Medic or Corpsman experience or 6 months Phlebotomy experience. Duties include but not limited: Provides technical support for nurses and physicians as needed and required, incumbent will receive direction and assignments from the Registered Nurse or Emergency Room Provider Performs phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG's, transports patients to other departments, place patients on cardiac and vital sign monitors, perform point of care testing, wound care, inserts Foley catheter and Nasogastric tubes, obtains lab specimens, and documents all care and procedure provided. Applies a variety of orthopedic splints and fits patients for crutches. Assists with Emergency Room Staff with removing simple sutures, physical exams, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures Documents pertinent patient observations, nursing care, and other data on emergency room flow sheet records. RECRUITMENT / RELOCATION INCENTIVES ARE AUTHORIZED up to $7500 for highly qualified candidates. Work Schedule: 7:30 am - 8:00 pm; 11:30 am - 12:00 am; 3:30 pm - 4:00 am; 7:30 pm - 8:00 am. Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician/PD41258A, PD41259A, PD15755A, and PD41258A Physical Requirements: The physical demands of this position are continuous with patient and equipment lifting and movement. Walking, bending, standing, stooping, lifting instruments and equipment, turning, positioning, and movement of patients is required. Working Condition: Work is primarily performed in the hospital building on the main floor, infrequently, duties require activities in specialty areas, diagnostic, patient wards, and other clinics. There is an additional hazard of nosocomial infection while working due to body fluids, caustic materials, and contamination both known and unknown. Gloves, masks and gowns are frequently required. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR): Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above):Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. OR Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. GS-05 grade level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service; experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience must provide emergency room technical support under direct supervision of the Emergency Room Staff performing phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG's, placing patients on cardiac or vital sign monitors, perform wound care, insert Foley catheters and Nasogastric tubes, obtain lab specimen and documenting all patient care and procedures provided. Examples of Specialized Experience for positions in the GS-0640 series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. OR Education (TRANCRIPTS REQUIRED): A bachelor's degree or four (4) years of education above the high school level with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR Combination of Education and Specialized Experience: An equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total qualification requirements for this grade level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service; experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience requires the evaluation of patients for emergency conditions or performing interventions based upon patient symptoms by obtaining and documenting patient's vital signs, order diagnostic studies, or assisting with specialized, complex, or potentially-life threatening procedures, per established protocols or standards. OR Education (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED): Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-06 level.I understand that Education at the GS-5 or Above is Generally, not applicable unless directly related. I have successfully completed one year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-06. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
