Duties
This position is in a National Park Service Unit. The primary purpose of the position is to perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher grade maintenance workers. Incumbent utilizes knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts. The duties described by this position may not fully meet the type of work to be performed or there may be work that this position does not do in each of the specialties; however, if the general intent is met then this position is appropriate.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Performs repairs to buildings and quarters. Constructs, installs, repairs, and replaces doors, shelves, hardware, frame structures, windows, trim and cabinets. Replaces siding, steps, and replaces glass panes. Uses both hand and power tools such as hammers, bars, handsaws, screw drivers, squares, skill saws, jig saws, routers, hand-held belt sanders and drills.
Applies paints or stains to masonry, or wood surfaces using brushes or rollers. Paints various types of structures such as interior and exterior metal, wood surfaces, and wooden trim and cabinets. Uses oil, lacquer and latex based paints, stains, varnishes, and thinners. Assists higher-level employees by mixing or stirring paints, and cleaning walls in preparation for painting. Cleans brushes, rollers, and spray equipment. Utilizes scrapers, sandpaper, steel wool, brushes, rollers, ladders, air, and airless sprayers.
Performs plumbing tasks such as replacing hose bibs, valves, nipples, unions and elbows, fixtures, toilets, flush valves, faucets, and various types of pipe and copper lines. Cut and thread pipes and winterizes water systems. Utilizes a variety of materials, tools, and equipment associated with the plumbing trade.
Patches and repairs roofs consisting of built-up tar and paper, metal, and asphalt shingles. Patching leaks in historic and other buildings using materials which retain the original appearance. Repairs consist of removing roofing material and rebuilding. Uses common hand tools related to roofing repairs. Receives instructions which outline the work to be done and the materials and methods to be used.
Performs electrical tasks involving making repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, and insulating defective wiring and fixtures. Utilizes hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, strippers, drills, and soldering irons.
Builds and sets forms on projects such as sidewalks and steps. Mixes, pours, spreads, and levels cement and concrete in preparation for final finishing. Removes broken concrete and prepares sub-surfaces. Must be skilled in use of a variety of tools common to the trade. Finish work is checked during progress and upon completion.
Performs masonry work involving the maintenance, repair, construction, and/or stabilization of historic sites built of stone, mortar, or adobe and/or contemporary buildings and structures. Mixes soils, water and amendments for mortars or adobes; removes damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair work and may perform duties that require a basic knowledge of applicable techniques and procedures to complete simple projects; and records location, time, and materials involved in process. Utilizes the common trade tools associated with this work, such as trowels, hammers, chisels, and crowbars. Required skill in the finishing of joints to match undamaged portions of the structure or use of air hammers, etc., is generally not required.
Performs custodial duties of cleaning buildings, offices, and comfort stations, empties trash, and cleans and waxes a variety of floors. Carries heavy items to work sites, i.e., rolls of barbed wire, fence posts, stays, etc. Assists with erosion control projects. Digs holes to install signs. Cleans drainage ditches, culverts, and gutters. Roadside litter patrol. Cleans fire grates. Unloads truckloads of supplies. Falls and bucks up timber.
Motor Vehicle/Forklift Operator: Operates and performs operator maintenance on cars, trucks, and/or van and stake trucks to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work. May operate a dump truck to haul earth, gravel, sand, and similar materials and/or debris. Operates a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment in a variety of situations. May maintain cars and light duty trucks in performing tune-ups filter changes, lubrication, tire repair and/or replacement, and minor electrical, fuel, cooling and exhaust system repairs.
May perform other duties such as painting equipment; welding; assisting higher grade worker with maintenance of utility systems in the facility, including sewer and electrical distribution; trails and grounds work; and asphalt work and road maintenance by repairing pavement surfaces, i.e., chuck holes, edge raveling, ruts, bleeding, grade depressions, and makes utility cuts.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision.(SCREEN OUT)
Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading)
Technical practices (theoretical precise, artistic)
Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation repair, etc.
Knowledge of Materials.
Use of Measuring Instruments.
Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
