This position is located in the Health Care Services, Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH), at Washington DC. The mission of AFRH is to provide residences and related services for certain retired and former members of the US Armed Forces. The primary purpose of the position is to provide professional psychiatric and medical services to the residents of the Home.
Duties
As a/an Advanced Practice Nurse (Psychiatry Nurse Practitioner), you will:
Perform psychiatric and medical assessment to obtain biopsychosocial and medical history, mental status, and risk factors.
Provide psychiatric assessment as it applies to an individual's ability to make decisions for self.
Initiate counseling and motivation strategies individualized for the patient and collaborate with interdisciplinary team to facilitate success in managing substance used disorders.
Utilize non-pharmacological treatment strategies, which may include motivational interviewing or other approaches as appropriate.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized Experience for the GS-12: You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Diagnosing, treating, and evaluating psychiatric illnesses, non-life threatening acute and chronic illnesses and disease; AND
Obtaining medical histories using different assessments such as Patient Healthcare Question (PHQ-9), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and conducting physical examinations; AND
Ordering, performing, and interpreting basic diagnostic studies; AND
Prescribing medications; AND
Collaborating with physicians and other health professionals as needed.
SPECIAL NOTE: Long-term care experience and/or interacting with geriatric patients is highly desired.
LICENSURE: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. You must have a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
ADDITIONAL LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants for Advanced Practice Nurse positions must be licensed or registered by a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position.
Education
Education Requirements: For Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions, applicants must possess a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position. Areas of specialties include Geriatric Psychiatry or other specialties identified for the position. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If you are qualifying based on foreign education, you must submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency. Refer to the
