This position is located with the Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service (PSAS) of the James A. Lovell VAMC in North Chicago, IL.
Duties

Major Duties:
Performs clerical duties related to patient care and treatment such as coordinating or recording patient activities.
Schedules appointments.
Ensures that the patient is informed of the place and time of each appointment.
Locates the prescription for the prosthetic item.
Determines the veteran's eligibility and entitlement for the prosthetic items.
Selects appropriate item from inventory, issues to veteran, selects correct bar code label for item issued, and provides consult to appropriate prosthetic clerk for posting to veteran's prosthetic record.
Determines when patient education is required and refer veteran to appropriate clinician for training.
Assists visitors and/or callers with the completion of forms or documents necessary to provide the prosthetic items.
Researches patient record information, appointment scheduling, and files.
Directs visitors and refers callers to appropriate staff member based on specific request or by ascertaining the nature of the call.
Inquiries received require evaluation to determine the most useful and appropriate information, resolve inconsistencies in available information, or provide alternatives.
Prepares all required patient travel documentation to be submitted for veteran reimbursement when appropriate.
Reviews and screens requests to release medical information from records by interpreting and applying Privacy Act and applicable local policies.
Processes incoming mail and serves as the alternate timekeeper.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm

Qualifications
IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-5 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes utilizing various computer programs including Microsoft applications to interpret and input data; performing word processing/typing tasks; answering phone calls and assisting with inquires; screening and directing patients to the appropriate staff member. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE.)

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: You must have successfully completed 4 years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. NOTE: One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience to meet the total requirements for this position. For GS-5 level positions, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE AND COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Work is primarily sedentary and is carried out in an office setting. The job functions require prolonged periods of working at a computer terminal. Ability to retrieve equipment from a storage room is required. Climbing associated with stocking of equipment and other items in storage areas is necessary. May carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. Normal safety precautions are adequate. The work involves moderate discomfort when visiting sites away from the office.
