About the Position: Serves as a paralegal specialist in the Military Justice Division of the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, providing legal support to military attorneys, paralegals, and court reporters who specialize in military justice.

Duties

Performs post-trial and appellate processing of courts-martial cases. Coordinates with the Provost Marshall's Office and civilian law enforcement agencies to obtain case reports. Conducts research and analysis for attorneys for a variety of legal subjects, such as regulatory requirements, rights of soldiers, and other legal issues. Serves as the Victim-Witness Assistance Liaison, locates witnesses, prepares travel orders and vouchers, makes travel and hotel reservations for trial counsels and witnesses. Provides reports to the Chief of Military Justice on the status of open actions and compliance with processing timelines.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to satisfactorily complete training to become a Notary Public and be able to meet bonding or other requirements inherent in the appointment as a Notary Public within 6 months of entrance on duty.
  • Temporary Travel is required up to 10%

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing paralegal duties which include but are not limited to: assisting in the gathering and organizing of facts and relevant evidence; preparing written communication such as summaries of precedent cases, interviews, and related case material for attorney use; searching and reviewing legal references, case files, and other legal sources to locate, analyze, and prepare reports on pertinent statutes, court decisions, legal opinions, and other legal documents. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. [remove LL.B or J.D., if unrelated] in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Legal Studies, Criminal Justice - Law, Juris Doctorate. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
