Duties

The Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound) is qualified by professional credentialing and academic and clinical experience to provide diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The scope of practice of the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer includes those procedures, acts and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience, has demonstrated competency, and has completed the appropriate ARRT (Ultrasound) or ARDMS certification(s) which is the standard of practice in ultrasound. Major Duties: Performs clinical assessment. Performs all requested sonographic examinations as ordered by the attending physician. Performs ultrasonic scans of major and minor organ systems. Uses proper technique and instruments in the ultrasound room when performing sterile studies. Independently assists radiologist/physicians in performing fluid aspirations, as well as intra-operative and trans vaginal procedures. Ensures that the proper time out procedure and consent forms are signed before the procedure is started. Ability to utilize, differentiate and overcome both physical and technical entities relevant to the various scanning modes, A, B and M (i.e. beam reflection, scanning, absorption, acoustic impedance and artifacts). Ability to recognize the appropriate use of various transducers and sequences to obtain a diagnostic study. Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images. Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings. Analyze sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician. Assists with the daily operations of the sonographic laboratory. Maintains a daily log of patients seen and registers exams in the computer system and edits exams when completed. Maintains ultrasound equipment work area in a clean and sanitary condition, and maintains adequate supplies. Addresses problems of patient care as they arise and makes decisions to appropriately resolve the problems. All other duties as assigned. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements stated above, the following qualification criteria must be met for each grade. The candidate's qualifications must clearly demonstrate the level of competence required for the grade. Certification: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS). GS-8 LEVEL: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-7) which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided the overall knowledge, skills, and abilities to conduct diagnostic ultrasound examinations in complex and unusual cases. At this level the technician is required to perform a full range of procedures including special complicated examinations for which there are no standard instructions or procedures. They perform independent portable ultrasound examinations in the intensive care units, emergency room, surgery, and throughout the Medical Center; Working independently. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Ability to perform diagnostic ultrasound examination on multiple areas of the body, including, but not limited to, the abdomen, pelvis, transvaginal, chest, small parts, thyroid, breast, and scrotum. 2. Ability to perform vascular studies such as renal artery, aortic aneurysm, portal-systemic shunts, etc. 3. Ability to assist radiologists with biopsy procedures determining the location, depth, and required needle angle for the lesion to be sampled. 4. Ability to assist in surgical procedures and fluid aspirations. Certification: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS). References: VA Handbook 5005/54 Part II Appendix G27 Medical Instrument Technician Qualification Standard. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-8. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-6 to GS-8.
